CGMS-A

A letter was sent to many cable operators.

Quote:

“HBO will implement the Copy Generation Management System for Analog
(CGMS-A) in the Vertical Blanking Interval (VBI) of the HBO Family feed and
in a few titles on HBO-On-Demand (HOD) and Cinemax-On-Demand (MaxOD).
Commencing June 15, CGMS-A will be included in all HBO programming services
(ie, HBO, Cinemax, HOD and MaxOD).”

The letter continues to mention that CGMS-A will be set to “Copy Once” for
the HBO and Cinemax linear services, and “Copy Never” for the On Demand
channels."

End Quote:

How will this affect my Tivo experience?

Re: CGMS-A

It just makes me sick to think about this. I hate how selfish people are
getting with their broadcasts. I understand not wanting people to sell
copied movies in bulk but stopping people from being able to record off
TV is not going to do it, it’s just going to annoy the hell out of
everyone on the planet.

I doubt that Tivo supports this, so it’ll have no effect for you. It’s
basically a flag that is sent with the signal and it tells those devices
that support it to limit the copying and such. The FCC is mandating all
devices on the market to have a broadcast flag by June 2005, but I think
that broadcast flag is different from CGMS. The broadcast flag will
allow people to record the show, but that is can only be played back on
that same device. I bet that some manufactures will make it easy for
people to hack the device to ignore this flag, as it will give them a
competitive advantage.
