I noticed at the Roster of Unicyclists (unicycling.org), theres a few people
from New York City. Are there any more on this list? I’ll be trying one for the
first time this weekend, probably at central park, and according to the Uni faq
it would be wise of me to learn with a couple experienced riders by my side. I
walked through the park the other day and was just swarmed by bicycles and
rollarbladers; we should really boost the unicycle representation there. Or
maybe I’ll be the only one
I might have to resort to bracing myself on a parking meter, and learning that
way Or perhaps I’ll have some luck and ride 50meters on my first attempt –
we’ll see.
Last spring I spent a week in the city and rode my 24" Schwinn in Central Park
every morning around the paved oval that surrounds the Great Lawn. Although
bicycles are prohibited, no one complained about my uni being there — I got a
ton of favorable comments. The track around the reservoir has a chain link fence
to hold onto, but it is fine gravel rather than paved. Also, bicycles are
prohibited and though no one said anything to me I did get some evil looks.
Another nice thing about the oval is that it is flat and you’ll definitely want
to save the hills (like the big ones south of Belvedere Castle) for when you
have more experience. Also, the big square trash cans in the park are great for
support when mounting.
