carbon fiber seat

Ok, My carbon fiber seat base should be getting here tomorrow, tuesday. Is
their anything I should know before drilling it out? I plan to use my
miyata seat post again, i think its a miyata, whatever came with my miyata
seat. Im going to use the plastic base as a rough guide and the seat post
bracket as an exact guide.

Once i drill it out, will I be able to upgrade to a wilder rail bracket
later? Um, what kind of bit should I be using? If i cant find a drill
press (one that ill be allowed to use anyways) can I use a cordless drill?
Anything else I should know.

Thanks,

Nick,

I used a 9/64" regular bit in a drill press for my base. You could use a cordless, but my preference is for a drill press for precision, etc. 9/64 was the right size for the 1/4"x20tpi bolts I was using. I put masking tape on both sides of the CF base before I drilled to make marks easier to see and reduce splintering. I don’t know if it helped, but it worked.

You’ll also want to drill a larger hole for the valve stem in the back of the seat, I don’t know what size this is, and the location will be pretty obvious when you put your air pillow on the base.

I put a Miyata bumper on the back of mine and my handle on the front in place of the front bumper. You can see pics of the whole deal on my website ( Main --> Uni Handle).

You’ll probably want to cut off the elastic band on the roach and put your own grommets in to be laced up with a shoe lace.

Good Luck,

It wouldn’t matter if you were going straight to a Wilder bracket, but
where you mount a Miyata post on a carbon base alters the seat angle. If
you have a stock Miyata post that you’re putting on it, I’d mount it
somewhat rearward of center since that will kick the nose of the seat up a
little. Probably not as much as would be ideal, but some.

I don’t remember what size drill bit I used, but you want something a
little undersized. It’s easy to make the hole bigger if necessary, but
impossible to make it smaller. I used a hand drill (the totally manual
kind that you crank). The carbon fiber is really easy drill.

After drilling it, use a small file to square off the corners of the hole.
You want to end up with a square hole because the Miyata bolts have a
square section under the cap. The square section keeps the bolts from
spinning in the hole. If the hole is too big the bolts will spin in the
hole, so be careful as you are drilling and filing. The carbon fiber is
really easy to file too.

I put masking tape on the base where the holes were going to go. I used
double stick tape to position the seatpost and bumpers. Then I used a pen
to mark the position of the holes on the masking tape. After that I pulled
everything off, crossed my fingers, and drilled the holes.

The holes for the Wilder rail bracket are in the same position as the
Miyata holes, so you will be able to upgrade to the Wilder bracket later.
