Hello i am a novice unicycler tat started december 18th 2007 sure i can jump stairs and stuff but i dont like to do big jumps. My question is can i be conisdered a “good” unicycler if i dont do big jumps (big as in like 4stairs or higher). I just like to MUni that kind of stuff. So can i be considered good without doing “tricks” i guess you could call it…
Ride because its fun and you enjoy it. Don’t be concerned with what other people think of your riding.
There is no cutoff minimum number of stairs you need to clear before you are considered “good”. There are plenty of amazing freestyle and flatland riders who don’t do any stairs at all.
I am in a similar boat to you, as i can only really go down gutters, etc, but since there’s not many people that unicycle in my area, i think that i appear to be pretty good when i’m on the street. So the fact still stands that it sorta depends who you ask.
yeah loads of good muni riders are scared of drops. We did world cup mtb downhill courses last year in the alps and none of us did many big drops or ups or whatever.
There’s a skill to riding fast and flowing well on mountain bike trails that many trials riders don’t have even if they can do a six footer. Also endurance, speed, power are key things that can make even us scaredy cats better than many of the trialsy riders.
You could practice skinnies and railings and be supper good at those without doing big jumps. However jumping 4 stairs if they are standard 8" inch stairs is not a small drop. That is about picnic table height and if you have good control over the unicycle that kind of drop should be more than enough to impress people.
Before I started riding Muni I was quite scared of big drops and big gaps. When I started progressing a bit in Muni I found I wanted to go off higher and higher drops and do bigger, more daring gaps. This has moved my trials riding on loads and I go for more ballsy gaps and stuff than I have ever done before.
If you can do parkour like that then I reckon you shouldn’t be scared or else just tried and go for it and don’t care if you don’t make, your better then me except I have been riding for less then you so yeah… P.S nice jews harp LOL!
just do what you enjoy doing and try what you want to learn because it makes you feel good. if you are dedicated to riding before you know it people will begin to recognise you and look up to you. look at the story of Shaun Johannesson. if you love riding you will improve- it’s like a law of nature no matter what style.
I think you shouldn’t rely on others to tell you how good you are. If you believe in yourself so much that you are a GOOD unicyclist. Then that’s all you need to know. I for one believe we are all good unicyclists. From the basic/learners to the professionals.
