California Idaho Mountain Unicycle Weekend

Muni Dudes,

Great pics! Now we can see some of the area. Looks like not a lot of shade,
at least on the higher elevations, so we should keep that in mind for hot
summer days.

Please note that most of us are Windows users. We can’t open files compressed
with Stuffit (that I know of), and Windows gets real confused trying to open
files that don’t have extensions on their names, such as “trail 1.jpg”. JPEG is
the best way to save photos.

Sounds tempting! After climbing 1800’ on Mr. Toads, at high altitude, I think
2000 is manageable too. Those of us that can’t ride all of it can walk. What’s
the altitude range up there?

That sounds great. Quite a playground you will have!

I think you are right. Also if the conventions are back to back I think it will
be too much and too many people will choose one or the other. Non-conflicting
dates should work much better (except maybe for people driving to Toronto from
west of you?).

There would seem to be no choice. I guess then we should shoot for the last
possible weekend before Labor Day, or around there. Hot is nothing new for MUni
Weekends of course.

I wonder if 2002 would be a better year. How far are you from the Seattle area?
I wonder if MUni Weekend could attract an international crowd? Or would it be
too much for us Americans (NUC, UNICON, MUni Weekend)? Probably. People would
need a break.

2002 will already be a big uni year in the Northwest. I don’t know that doing
MUni Weekend up there then will be overkill. But I also don’t want to suggest
waiting until 2003. What do others think?

I would love to go back to Santa Cruz if the guys out there are willing. I could
also handle more of the registration for them if they want. Also there are
trails around Sacramento (or possibly the Bay area) that are good, or just
worthy of riding again.

Last call for objections to Labor Day Weekend 2001 for the next Muni
Weekend. So far responses are positive with one regretable exception. If you
want a different date it is time to do some campaigning because we are about
to finalize.

The location is at the Sun Valley ski resort in Idaho, near my home. The lifts
go up three thousand vertical feet, on two lifts with a nice easy trail from the
top of the first lift for warmup or novice level downhill riders. For Sunday we
have found a very nice trail near Galena Summit that returns to Galena Lodge
about 1500 feet lower than the starting point. It has some short uphill
challenges on the way to Titus Lake, and some obstacles on the way down to
Galena lodge, but is fairly easy for most of the way. I am still scouting an
option for the crazies that climbs above Titus Lake and descends a steep draw to
the lake. Right now I am hindered by a couple feet of snow. Also I am scouting a
crazy ride for Friday that would go up Adams Gulch, through Eve Gulch eventually
gaining close to two thousand feet. Much of the climb is not ridable, but you
are welcome to prove me wrong. It eventually descends my favorite downhill to
Apples Bar and Grill.

Please come Idaho Joe

Re: California Idaho Mountain Unicycle Weekend

Sounds good. What is the elevation at the top of the lift? And for the
Friday ride?

Looking forward to it!

Re: California Idaho Mountain Unicycle Weekend

don’t forget about those of us who run some form of UNIX, or Linux  The jpeg
file type is compressed as it is, so stuffing or zipping, or whatever people
like to do these days doesn’t generally decrease the file size in any
substantial way, and a lot of us are just too lazy to go through the trouble of
decompressing such things.

If it’s going to be hot during the day sounds like a good time to do a night
ride under a full moon (with head lights too). Full moon on Sept 1 2001 and Aug
3 2001. But a night ride with a large group would be a very big challenge to
make sure no one got lost or had any other problems in the dark. Probably a
better idea for a small group.

I’m going to be doing as much muni as I can during NUC and UNICON. I know of
some good trails up there and am going to investigate to find more. I’d even be
willing to help organize some group muni rides before, during and after
NUC/UNICON. It could almost be a muni weekend without the weekend part. But I
don’t think it should take the place of a formal muni weekend.

Yes! What Joe is looking for is to see if any of you MUni people have conflicts
on Labor Day weekend. If not, I think it will be a nice advantage for us.

True enough about Windows getting all fussy about extensions, but there IS a

Not all of us are Windows users (like it matters or something)

Re: California Idaho Mountain Unicycle Weekend

Excellent Idea: the extra day of travel should help a lot.

RE: California Idaho Mountain Unicycle Weekend

Labor Day weekend would be out for me. My wife and I organize a Tandem Bicycle
Rally over each Labor Day at Leavenworth, WA. However, I’m just one person. If
it works for most people, then go for it.

Labor Day weekend would be perfect for us. The extra day saves me taking an
extra day of vacation - that would be great.
