At the last Muni Weekend it was suggested that we hold next years here at Sun
Valley Idaho, and I think it is an excellent Idea. Since then I have scouted
some trails, especially one that has access from the top of Galena Summit and
returns to the highway fifteen hundred feet lower at Galena Lodge. This trail
has some short difficult stretches with some short uphill challenges on the way
to Titus Lake, but the long stretches are fairly easy. This combination should
provide interesting riding for everyone, and the scenery is excellent. I will be
attempting to scout an extreme option from the trail that ascends to above the
lake. I have included some photos in JPEG. If you cannot open them I can send
them in another format. I know we have TIFF, and several others.
Also, I was trying to find a way from the Adam’s Gulch trail, across to my
favorite extreme downhill into the Warm Springs area, near Apple’s Bar and
Grill. This ride would be a Friday extreme for crazy people only. One option is
a hiked ascent through Eve Gulch, but the snow came before I was able to
complete this crossing. I suppose the ride could be called Adam, Eve, and the
apple. The topo map shows that it probably involves a 2000 foot climb. An easier
option would be for riders to return down Adams Gulch, which is one of my
favorite rides also. Adams gulch has a series of log bridges that are a couple
feet above a shallow stream and are challenging. Also it has some short uphill
challenges. The descent into Warm Springs is a series of steep switchbacks
through the sagebrush.
I have a job in construction and I have begun to accumulate a stash of materials
to make some trials obstacles. I have five large diameter logs about eight feet
long, several beams of various widths and lengths, and a huge pile of redwood 2
by 6 that came off an old deck which we remodeled. Also I have several stumps,
some plywood and some chunks of beams. Snow has gotten in the way for now, but I
plan to have a course in the spring.
Megumi did point out that the weekend we have chosen, July 15, has been
superceded by the National Convention in Ontario. It seems to me that people
will not travel on consecutive weekends but perhaps I am wrong. Many people also
have family commitments around July 4th. Sun Valley’s lifts are open from July
4th to Labor Day so I guess we have the month of August but Idaho will be hot
and dusty then. I think August may be our only option, and perhaps Californians
will not mind the weather. Another option would be to schedule the weekend so
that it could be attended in transit to the NUC. Perhaps the Sun Valley location
should be saved for another year. I am looking for feedback, and I do not have
everyone’s e-mail, so please forward this to anyone who might want to attend. I
also plan to post this on the newsgroup. If you read this on the newsgroup, and
want the pictures, send me your address. Soon we should have a website up.
Hi Joe - finally got to see your nice pictures (by installing the Windows
expander at www.aladdinsys.com ). Looks very nice and I think it will be a great
Muni weekend. Your plan of a difficult Friday ride sounds great, just as we did
this year at Tahoe. 2000’ of climbing sounds fine to me. We are working on a
possible ascent of Mt Shasta this summer that will be 7000’ of up to over 14000!
What elevation is the start and finish? The Friday riders may want to arrive
Thursday or even earlier to get used to the altitude.
About the timing, unfortunately you’re probably right that August is the only
time that’s really possible. But I bet the temps aren’t really that bad…nice
dry mountain air and all that. What would we expect in the daytime, surely below
90F? John suggest late August, but what about the weekend of say Aug 11-12? Or
even the one before, Aug 4-5? I bet it’s a little nicer there earlier in August
rather than later. Whatever weekend we pick, let’s do it this year - why wait?!
See you there!

Whenever people talk about mountains it makes me jealous. The flat lands of
Ontario don’t offer much excitement in the way of massive terrain changes.
Although, it looks like we’re going to have a fairly challenging uphill and
downhill course for next years NUC.
August seems to be a decent time to hold the event. Nothing wrong with the heat
… that’s what camelbak’s are for.
As soon as the date is set I can’t wait booking time off work

Don’t feel bad, Carl, I’d be willing to be that the flatlands of Ontario have
nothing on the flatlands of Kansas. Seriously, this is the flattest place I’ve
ever seen!
