I’m upgrading from my ipod nano to the “classic”, and wanted to know if anyone here has this ipod. From what I can see at apple online, the models are: Shuffle, nano, classic and touch. The first two are not made to play video, although I’ve heard of a few ways to get it to do so.
The classic seems to be a good choice since it plays videos–and 150 hours of it!–right out of the box, and has a huge 120gb hard drive. Looks like a good size screen too. Only wish it had a built-in external speaker for showing videos to a group of ppl on the fly. Only one person can use headphones. This might be something to try.
Damn. . .I have a nano and I watch videos on it all the time. Of course, it is last gen, so they may (who knows why?) removed that feature from it.
My wife has my classic now. It’s nice because I never had to take any music or vids off to put other ones on. . .buuuuuut, the Nano is so much smaller and better for strapping to my arm and taking for a run or a ride. I won’t go back to a classic (but I do miss all that space, sometimes).
To throw a monkey wrench in your decision-making: if video is a priority for you, the Touch is a no-brainer. Biggest screen, large hard drive, AND it has WiFi capability so you can show all your YouTube vids w/o using up disk space to store them. Probably the only down side is the hefty price tag, and maybe the size, if you plan on using it for riding.
i have the touch, and i love it. the main downside of it is the battery life, especially when you have wifi on. I pretty much have to charge it every day.
I have a Touch… I regret it… hahaha… I’d much rather have a Classic and forget about the Firmware updates and stuff… And I mainly listen to music, and It’a full… 8gig’s of music out of 8 gig’s a storage… And I hate the games…
I have an older 2G nano, but it does not have video capability! Did yours just automatically have that feature, or did you configure it somehow? Or maybe yours is a lot newer than mine?
I tried to edit my last post but I ran out of time. Apparently only the newest, 4th generation, 8G nano has the video feature. Again, I’ve heard of some ppl using converters and all sorts of little tricks to get their older nanos to play videos, but the older ones simply did not come with that feature built in.
I still think that the newest classic is the best value as it has the most HD space by FAR at 120G, vs a mere 8G of the nano. The touch is also lacking in memory compared to the classic, and unless you’re planning on using wifi and playing games, the classic still owns. The main reason I can see for getting the nano, which also has a smaller screen than the classic, but still decent, is the smaller, lighter weight and the ease in which you can carry it during rides. And 8G is more than enough space for me, plus the battery lasts an impressive 24 hours!
Yeah I figured you have the latest gen. nano. But I plan to have lots of videos on mine, and the Classic’s 120GB memory is about 8X that of the nano, but less than 2X the price.
Hm, I like my iPod. And I think 16GB is just good for me because I don’t plan to put too many things in it so… 16 is just fine. I have some Family Guy episodes in it, and songs and podcasts and all that stuff and I still have some space to use! Heheh
The only thing that I think is a little bit annoying is that shake thing! Sometimes I forget to ‘lock’ it and then I’m singing very loud and excited and then I jump or walk or something like that and the song changes! Hahahaha and that ruins all my singing! Damn!
80GB HDD
Plays video, music, pictures, pdf
Built in speaker
I also bought the docking station allowing me to record from tv, freeview and dvd and watch back at the touch of a button.
Records and plays back AVI
Newer models have wifi options and touchscreen.
Stuff i dont like
Due to HDD, can be quite big/ heavy but one soon gets used to it
Cant play ACC (ipod) music files, however a plugin is available - cheaper on ebay as is a plugin for rmvb files and the likes.
Still going strong after over two years and quite a few bumps. I would highly reccomend to anyone looking a new multimedia player.
I do like the ipod touches but i like having the larger memory of the archos.
I have the 80g classic. I love how you have so much space that you can just keep almost all your movies on it without running out of space. Mind you, i’ve almost filled up over 70g so far.
Does anyone here use their iPod/MP3 player while riding? If so, what do you use to secure the device to your body? For the trek’s to work, I usually just put my Nano in my backpack’s side pocket, but I’ve realized that I have nowhere to put it when I’m just out riding regularly (pockets in shorts don’t work too well, cause the cord gets in the way). Is there any type of strap or something that works good for this?
