Buy decent pedals, newbies

Always one to share my gradual emergence from a state of ignorance…

I put trapezoid pedals with moulded studs on my old UMX years ago, and was pleased to see almost identical pedals on my Pashley MUni when I got it out the box a few months back. However, the MUni pedals very quickly started clicking and graunching, and I decided to spoil myself by squandering 25 quid on some DDG pedals with sealed bearings and screwed-in studs.

Not the best pedals in the world, I’m sure, but the extra grip translates into extra confidence, and extra torque. It is only when your feet won’t slip that you realise how much effort you were putting into making sure they didn’t slip before. The increase in control and power is very noticeable.

So, I’m sure all you experts knew this, but for the newbies and sceptics out there, I’d say decent pedals will make more difference to the performance of your MUni than you might imagine. Make it an early upgrade.

I know exactly what you mean… after taking a tumble which I put down to not gripping the slightly wet pedals well I bought the bullet and some new pedals. Again, not the world’s best but they are so much better! No longer are you afraid to put power down because you know that it takes a lot to move your feet once they’re on the pedal. Hell, I have difficulty moving them when I want to, let alone accidentally.

I can now ride up the hill without having to worry about having to be tentative just in case my foot slips, I can just grab the seat, grit my teeth and go.

Phil, just me

to save on shipping, however, go ahead and order the Roach leg armour that you will be begging for 4 or 5 rides with your new pedal studs.

Who’d of thought that bolts as thick as pedal ones can still puncture your skin? Ouch

Does it also work when your knee slips?

I like it when you can take something out of context and it takes on a whole new meaning
