I’m getting closer to buying a KH24 muni and a Schlumpf hub.
At least at UDC, it looks like the cost of a complete KH24 is cheaper than the sum of its parts, by about $100 if I figured correctly.
If I buy a complete uni, and then replace the hub and spokes with a Schlumpf, I’ll have an extra KH hub and spokes sitting on the shelf.
But I suppose this might come in handy someday if I need repairs on the Schlumpf.
So I guess this is the way to go?
Or maybe there are other stores that have a better option?
I don’t know…I’ve done it a bunch of times, and rebuilt my Kh36 at least 3 or 4 times with the same spokes. I haven’t had any breakages on them yet.
My 2cents: A spare wheel is nice, and all it will cost you is an extra rim, since you have to already get spokes and the hub (duh :). So, I’d get the package, and buy a spare rim + spokes.
I have built more wheels that I could ever remember and I have rebuilt wheels with the same spokes at least dozens of times, and I can’t imagine how un-lacing a wheel would damage spokes. Once you take all of the nipples off you can pretty much shake the spokes out of the hub, and just let gravity do the work. Unless there’s something I’m missing, or uni wheels are really that different from bike wheels.
According to Campagnolo you can put unreasonable stress on hub flanges if you don’t detention the wheel first. This is why they don’t ever recommend clipping spokes out of a wheel under full tension.
From what I’ve read about the Schlumpf hubs it’s probably a good idea to have a spare wheel ready for the day that you have to send the hub back for repair. That way you only have one wheel you need to take apart and put back together.
I wouldn’t recommend reusing spokes UNLESS you’re lacing the same hub to the same rim. If the wheel has been built and strain-relieved properly, the spokes have taken a set. You should only reuse them if they go into the same positions.
That isn’t your biggest problem, however. The spoke length is going to be different with that different hub, so you will need new spokes. As long as you’re going this route, splurge for a new rim and build a second wheel.
When I got my KH29 Schlumpf, I got the whole uni, then the guni hub, spokes (different length) and a rim. Having a wheel to swap in seemed prudent with the occasional troubles going at the time with the Schlumpf. Getting the extra wheel is not much more money (compared to the guni), and four bolts allow you to ride the ungeared KH24 in a flash if you want or need to.
Sometimes I feel like I’m asking a stupid question, but holy crap!! I’m so glad I did!
I HADN’T EVEN THOUGHT OF BUYING AN EXTRA RIM!!! Nor the problems (though arguable) I might have with delacing/lacing spokes.
Ok, so my plan is to buy a complete KH24 and parts to build a Schlumpf wheel (rim, spokes, nipples, and a Schlumpf).
At UDC, the most obvious choice of rim to me is the KH 24 rim. I’m more of a xc muni rider, so a Large Marge isn’t worth it… right?
Are there some other options I should look at. I’ve searched the forums several times but I didn’t come up with much info… probably because all my search terms are too common.
And for spokes, anything wrong with the 14g ones at UDC?
You could probably get spokes cheeper at your local bike shop. Double butted 14-15-14 spokes would probably be the best (strongest, a tad lighter) but the difference is very minor.
