Burning DVD's???

Hey, i know some think its wrong to burn dvds, but some say its alright… i rent and copy dvds all the time, so i was just wondering what your thaughts on dvd copying…

Technically it’s copyright infringement to rent and copy.

Technically within our rights to copy a DVD we own (as a backup or safe copy for the kids).

Of course having the legal right to copy a work for our own use does not necessarily give us the legal ability. Yeah, you have the legal right to do it in the copyright law, but you cannot do it legally. To copy a DVD (or many other files or media with DRM) you need to crack the encryption and the tools to break the copy protection are illegal due to the DMCA.

So no, you cannot legally copy a DVD even if doing so is within your legal rights.

Complain to your government about your rights to protect your media investments being eroded.

Aww, come on, Jason…be nice to the kid’s who don’t use proper grammar.

Being a Canadian citizen of 17 (I’m assuming he’s 17), irvinegr should have completed several years of intensive training in grammar, spelling and punctuation. His posts do not demonstrate such training.

Of course, he could be posting whilst extremely intoxicated… in which case I commend his <50% typing error rate.

JSYK Software for DVD copying is readily available. Alot of it is even shareware or freeware.

But, yeah, making copies of DVDs you rent is stealing and is illegal for good reason. If you want to see something rent it. If you want to see it many times buy it. You can get used DVDs so cheaply that buying enough to fill every second of your day with entertainment is not that difficult or expensive.

maestro8 you dont know me, how do u know english is my first language?? what if i am an immigrant?? what if my parents are all deaf and cant speak properly and i am home schooled?? what if i am a native canadian who lives on a reserve and doesnt learn much english??? what if i went to french school since i was young???

i am not an immigrant or anything, i just took french school.

I usually “back up” DVDs that I borrow from friends.

I have several of the freeware DVD ripping programs. They are easy to find at places like afterdawn and doom9. Being free and easy to get doesn’t make them more legal.

Copying a DVD for your own use is a civil matter and not criminal. It is copyright infringement and not theft. The law is clear that there is a difference. You aren’t going to end up in criminal court for copying a DVD or CD from your friends.

Copyright infringement only gets into criminal law when it is done at a large scale and/or for commercial gain.

Calling the act of copying a DVD or CD theft is PR spin from the likes of the RIAA and MPAA. It’s a loaded word that doesn’t mean what they want you to think it means.
