Budget and bodge it air seat

Not being of the Blue Peter persuasion, air saddles and the like sound a bit complicated to me, but as I’m riding further and further on the Coker, some sort of cushion seems necessary.

Today’s experiment: a 16 inch tube, folded and stuffed into a sock then partly inflated. This makes a cushion.

Now, place it on the saddle, and stretch another sock over the front of the saddle to hold the cushion in place. Now stretch a third sock over the rear of the saddle, and the cushion and pull the ankle hole as far forward as possible. With sufficient effort, it will pull right over the front of the saddle.

Thus, we have a tube folded to more or less the right shape, in a sock, in another sock, in another sock, with the two outer socks holding the inner one and the tube in place. The valve sticks out through a small hole snipped in the toe of the outermost sock.

First ride showed that it worked, but I needed to lower the seat a little. Also, it needs contouring a bit to allow for the slim waist of the seat. Version 2 has the tube folded to make six parallel bits, then bound lightly with electrician’s tape to keep it narrow in the right places. See how we go. I’ll report in due course.

I seem to remember someone posting the dimensions of the dog bone shaped
sock… you may wish to look back through the posts because that may
help with your contouring issue.

Never mind Blue Peter your description made me think about fingerbobs, is your Viscount speaking now?

Anyway I’ve got a spare tube bag I made that’s the right size for a 16" tube and the Viscount. We’ll have to meet up for a ride soon and you can have it. You could check out my air con and cover at the same time to give you some ideas.

Cheers, Gary
