British Unicycle Hockey League Tournament, London 27th September

The Lunis are pleased to announce the first tournament of the 2008/2009 season on Saturday 27th September 2008 at the Westway Sports Centre. This will be the first tournament of this year’s British hockey league and will be primarily for organised teams only but let me know if you are interested in forming part of a scratch team.

The court will be booked from 12 noon 'till 7pm. As things stand we can only accommodate 8 (or at maximum 10) teams over the seven hours.

The hockey will be strictly 5-a-side. Teams may have any number of subs if they so wish and rotate their players during the day.

Note: please ensure that you use plastic pedals and NOT metal ones.

The cost per team (regardless of numbers) will be £20.

This event will be held at…

It’s outside, but underneath the A40 flyover so you don’t get too wet
when it rains. The surface is smooth Tarmac, it’s a bit abrasive on
sticks, but OK to play on and great for fast turns!

If anyone would like to stop over on the Saturday night, then you’re
more than welcome to. Floor space will be at a premium. so if you’d
like to stop over then it’s essential that you let me know ASAP.

Register you team name to confirm a place in this hockey tournament
by emailing me, Paul, or sending me a PM.

We appreciate that many of you are travelling long distances for this
tournament, but because of the time slot and the number of teams
attending, it’s imperative that everyone arrives no later than
11.30am for a 12 noon start. Registration fees will be collected on
arrival.

See you all there.

Paul

Directions to the Westway by car are below,

To get to Westway Sports Centre by car from the north or west

Approach along the Westway (A40). Take the exit marked Hammersmith &
Shepherds Bush (A3220). The road comes down to Holland Park
Roundabout, a very large one with a central glass tower. Take the
first exit signed Central London. Immediately turn left into Royal
Crescent and immediately left again into St Ann’s Villas. Continue,
bearing very slightly right at the junction before the railway bridge
(the road is now called Bramley Road). Drive under the railway bridge
to the flyover bridge ahead. Drive under the flyover bridge and
immediately turn left into Crowthorne Road - the car park entrance
ramp is then immediately in front of you, the car parking is in the
Centre’s own underground car park (below the full-size football pitch).

To get to Westway Sports Centre by car from the south

Approach on the one-way system that comes past the Earl’s Court
Exhibition Centre (Warwick Road) - follow the system up Holland Road
to the major roundabout (Holland Park Roundabout) with a central
glass tower. Take the third exit signed Notting Hill Gate (A402). As
you drive round the roundabout ensure that you are in the left lane
at the point where you leave it, because you need to turn left almost
immediately; turn left into Royal Crescent and immediately left again
into St Ann’s Villas. Continue up this road, bearing slightly right
at the junction before the railway bridge (the road is now called
Bramley Road). Drive under the railway bridge to the motorway bridge
ahead. Drive under the motorway bridge and immediately turn left into
Crowthorne Road - the car park entrance ramp is then immediately in
front of you, the car parking is in the Centre’s own underground car
park (below the full-size football pitch).

Bump

There must be someone who isn’t at Unicon…

I’m not at unicon, but don’t play hockey.

I would have thought we’d like an EMU team, I 'll check tonight with the rest of the folks but yep, pencil us in for a spot
Roland

I’m sure we can gather a team. Please pencil in a penguin spot.

Should we be having this event with the BUC happening the weekend after?

Hi,

As most of you may know by now, the BUC is being planned for the 3rd - 5th October. I’m not sure if it has officially been announced yet - perhaps in Uni magazine. There is a website here that gives some details http://www.unicycle.org.uk/buc15/ - I’m sure Anna can enlighten us on the details.

Anyway the relevance to our hockey competition is that I suspect several teams will not want to attend 2 long distance events on consecutive weekends. I am tempted to cancel the 27th but I thought I would ask for a show of hands quickly - if anyone has a strong opinion then please respond ASAP.

I am trying to avoid a situation where we only have a few teams attending the first league match and then watering down the league for the rest of the year. Ideally, the first league match should be attended by all teams who will be regular competitors throughout the year.

It may be possible to make the first league meeting part of the BUC but this hasn’t even been discussed with BUC organisers yet.

Any comments?

Thanks,
Barry.

Tournament Postponed

The tournament is postponed until after BUC. We’re sorry to have to do it, but we want to avoid a poorly attended tournament, particularly as it would be the first tournament of the new season.

We will announce the new date when we have it.

Paul

Thats a real shame, however we’ll look forward to the rearranged date and its probably best to get a good turn out as that always makes for better hockey. Still that means that the last opportunity for a pre BUC hockey tune up is the EMU scratch and refereeing tournament on Saturday 6th september details can be found here

Thank you for the update. see you at BUC.

SWUM have plans for our traditional early Jan hockey tourny in 2009.
3rd Jan, Exeter Riverside (as before) 2 courts and good veiwing gallery. Room for 8/9 teams. Pizza and overnight afterwards at Sylvannia hall.

That is a shame, but it is good news for those of us stuck in Morzine
