I want to order some brakes for my 24 muni, any suggestions, advice etc thanks
I would advise you two things:
- Search the forums for such a topic if you haven’t already
- Post questions of such a topic in the Rec.Sport.Unicycling forum.
Besides that, I don’t know what to say.
Beyond the above, stating a more complete question is always helpful in getting useful answers. What frame and wheel does your MUni have? Brake mounts or no? Etc. But reading those older threads might tell you everything you need to know…
ok
ok got it yes it has brake mounts,
Okay then. If you plan to finish the sentence above we’re getting somewhere…
I have nimbus 24in muni w mounts and would love to buy brakes,22 33 plastic steel,im so confused, whats good and I will buy,Im coming here for advise.Mostly do freeride stuff 3inch wide tire thanks guys for the help, kinda new to this uni lingo
The nimbus frames have Magura mounts (the ones with mounts anyway) so you will probably want to get the magura brakes. It doesen’t matter if you get a HS11, HS22, or HS33 they are all very similar, in fact the only diffrence is the brake lever.
Using the Magura HS33 effectively
I bought a Nimbus pro complete with T7 and Magura HS33. Then I had to remove the handle and brake as I found these bits of metal around the seat very distracting whilst trying to learn how to mount the 36er. After a while I put the handle back on and love it. I am up to doing 35mile rides on mostly flat roads. Now I have put the brake back on in anticipation of some downhill sections of road I want to negotiate - but how the heck do you use that brake?!
The downhills I am on are gentle but I want to take the weight off my legs as I try to slow the unicycle downhill. How is the brake used? Is there a balance achieved between leg pressure and brake pressure. someone mentioned the term, ‘drag-brake’ but what does this mean? Another thread mentioned replacing the fluid with water to make the brake softer when applied. Any advice?
When learning to use the brake start off by going slow, it will probably throw you a couple times until you are used to the feeling.
When I use a brake going down hill I use it to basically “flatten” the downhill. i put just enough pressure on the brake that I don’t need any back pressure on the pedals. It is amazing how much energy you can use to stay in control going down a hill with no brake.
The Nimbus frame flexes quite a bit outwards when braking so I would not worry about weakening the brake for better modulation but I would consider polishing your rims braking surface for a nice consistent feel in your brakes.
Start applying the brake slightly at the top of the hill while you are in control. Just enough to feel it touch but not slow you down. Adjust the pressure as needed as you descend. Don’t wait until you are halfway down the hill and start to feel like you might get out of control to start pressing the brake. If you do the latter you will probably depress it too much too quickly and lose control. The key is to start early and make very small adjustments. I found that I can go faster downhill when I use my brake because the descents are smooth and I can increase my speed and stay in control.
