Wow! A magura brake! I do quite a bit of mountain biking and they have a
reputation of being the strongest rim brakes around. They are fully hydraulic
and most if not all serious trials MTBikers use them because you can stop on a
penny. Is this a good thing for a unicycle brake? Also they cost a bit

Hi people, I’ve been thinking about putting a brake on my Coker and John at
unicyclesource told me that a lot of people like the Magura brand brake. I was
wondering what people thought of this brand and if so what model or style of
Magura brake. If you have any other preference for other brands please add that
also. Please be as specific as possible and any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

I am not sure that Magura brakes are the best for a Coker. In the US the
Magura’s are used on Muni. Here it is occasionally beneficial to lock the wheel
up while hopping. On a Coker that is a never. You want to add friction to wheel
to help the knees.

My critia for my Coker brake were cleary different to yours. I got a pair of
second hand bar end shifters( shimano) and a second hand caliper brake ( black
no brand) then got the guy at my LBS to fit it for me, total cost 29 quid .I
don’t want to stop on a sixpence, I just want a little assistance slowing the
wheel on down hils, in fact I think I’ll be faster on downhills with the brake
than with out.
If I were to do again with more money to spend, I’d try and find a duel pivot
brake as the single pivot one I have doesn’t always open evenly when I let the
brake off. The friction shifter I’ve got is just grand an the LBS did a good
neat job. So if your in the Reading UK area I can recomend Richard at Action
Bikes for uni work.

Re: brake types
Joe,
The only Magura brake I've had experience with is the Louise (on my
mountain bike). It's a full hydraulic setup. I was not very happy with
them at all. They required constant adjustment and sqeaked something
awful. The caliper did not allow enough room for the rotor's normal
runout and hence the rotor would run the caliper frame at the high spot.
The brake levers were plastic and tended to break alot. I've upgraded to
the CODA Expert brake which is a better design. I'm told Shimano is due
to enter its disc brake in the market sometime around Jan/Feb. All disc
brakes are quirky though. Good luck.
