Boomerangs

I’m thinking of getting myself a boomerang in the future.
Have you guys every thrown a boomerang? They seem really cool.

ahahaha, yeah they are cool, but about as useful as frisbees.

i have chucked them before, and had them come back, but most of the time they just fly off into the distance.

i’d say get a cheap one and have a muck around

Yeah! I have thrown them - ive owned a few in my time - theyre really fun, and not HEAPS difficult to learn to throw - i would highly recommend getting one

I love frisbees! I should get one today!

It would be about 40 us dollars with shipping and everything to get one here. Do you think they’re worth it?

I had a boomerang once. It was a really good one. It worked pretty well. I could get it to come back and everything. The trick is trying to catch it on the way back. I lost mine in a dam though. I would suggest gettings one and trying it out.

As long as your careful not to break it, which is easy done if you throw in a rocky area or a place with a lot of houses or whatever. A big field or park works well! They are a lot of fun

40 bucks!!

i could go to a cheap asian run (no offence) australian souvenier shop and get a working one for 10 bucks!

hmmm. go for it

Well, this one will be a proper custom-made one. It’s about 30$, plus 16$ for shipping to europe. I’ll probably get one next summer. I’m investing in unicycles right now.

Don’t own one myself, but have thrown boomerangs owned by a friend. He had a big heavy sculpted plywood boomerang, with a brand name of “Bakwoods”. I think the model is now made by Davro. His looked like the top one on this page:

When thrown perfectly, with proper account of wind strength and direction, it would make a large circle and return within a few feet to be caught. My friend managed a good throw and catch maybe once in 5 or 6 times. I managed the occasional good throw, but never succeeded in catching it. The problem for me was that most of the energy used in throwing it hard, seems to get converted into increased rotational speed as the boomerang slows down. It is all very well to get a perfect throw and have it more or less stop in front of you, three feet from the ground, but when the damn thing looks to be rotating quicker than a formula one engine, it takes some bravery to try and catch it. The thing was very heavy and dangerous, as we discovered a couple of times.

We were safety conscious and never threw when anyone was in “the killing zone”, Any close spectators were advised to watch the boomerang, and move away to the left of its path if it was coming too close. One lad panicked and ran directly away from it and was hit on the back of the head. A big lump formed but no permanent damage done.

Not so with the dog, a few days later. The lady and her dog were a long way out of the danger zone as my friend threw the boomerang. But some dogs have little sense, and this one decided to go chase the stick. Ordinarily the stick would have landed, and the dog would reach it some time later. But the boomerang was coming back, closing the distance, and although it was then a good twenty yards from where it was thrown, it did finish by hovering perfectly a foot or so from the ground, and spinning like crazy. Almost as crazy as the dog, which jumped up to try and catch it. The dog was one of those small thinly disguised rats: a Yorkshire Terrier and being so small it had no chance. I think it was dead before it hit the ground.

Of course the lady owner was highly upset, and after significant shouting and ignoring the suggestion it was not our fault she flagged down a police car. But we were in a public park, on an open field, and were able to point at the notice requiring that dogs must be kept on leads. So luckily there was nothing she could do.
However it is worth noting that boomerangs are dangerous, but good fun.

Wow, thats awful… imagine having your head sheared off or even just being belted by a rapidly spinning boomerang… poor dog

i have had a boomerang and i have had a dog. both were pretty good but they never did play together.

The difference between a boomerang and a dog though is that if you throw the dog, it usually doesn’t come back.

when i threw my boomerang it usually didnt come back, unless the dog decided to get it, but that was rare.
ive never thrown a dog before.

Frisbees are loads of fun when you get into Ultimate and games like Tip it. Do a search online for these two games and you will be hooked. I’d say invest in a good Ultimate Frisbee and it will last you a lifetime, just as long as you don’t let it touch any hard surface like pavement. Stick to grass to keep it in the best shape.

On the other hand I hear boomerangs are lots of fun too. I have one, but haven’t had a chance this summer to go out and throw it. I’d think that they would get a bit boring after a while, but with a frisbee you can do some really neat things.

if your gonna get one make sure its not a hunting boomarang coz the go for ages and don’t come back

Frisbees are exponentially more useful. Would like to see someone try to play “ultimate boomerang” or “boomerang golf”.

but you can’t really use a frisbee has a hunting weapon if you want to kill a kangaroo.

yes, ultimate boomerang, interesting.

Are frisbees a big thing in the USA? Sure, in Australia they’re cool and all, but there doesnt seem to be much hype surrounding them. Could someone enlighten me as to what the merits of frisbees are?

i sometimes chuck them with hippies.
we stand in a field and go for it.
great for music/circus festivals as a time waster
