books to recommend?

hi … i’m a beginning unicyclist, and i was wondering if i should buy a book on
unicycling. as far as i can tell these are my best options:
a) Jack Wiley’s Complete Book of Unicycling
b) Charles Dancey’s How to Ride Your Unicycle
c) buy no book and just rely on this newsgroup, various websites, and tips from
the one person i know who unicycles.

any opinions?

Get the Complete Book. It may not have the nice color glossy photos, but it has
far more information than the other books. Available through the Unicycling
Society of America: http://www.unicycling.org/usa/merchandise/

Even if you buy both books, still rely on this newsgroup for information. It’s
hard to come up with a question that can’t be answered here. -Mark

I think Wiley’s book is worth getting - there is some useful info in there on
learning to ride and doing tricks, and besides that, it is just plain fun to
read and look at the interesting pictures. I’m sure that his books have helped
and inspired many many people over the years.

The newsgroup and its archives is probably the best resource for info. Also,
don’t forget the unicycling videos that are available.

I often wonder why Jack Wiley doesn’t seem to be involved in unicycling any more

  • I never hear of him attending conventions and apparently he doesn’t read this
newsgroup. I also wonder the same thing about Steve McPeak, whose feats are
mentioned several times throughout the book.

Re: books to recommend?

If you’ve got internet access, the websites are the most cost effective route. I
own one of Wiley’s books (The Unicycle Book), which I used a lot before I got a
computer. The Unicycle Page is my favorite website for getting information on
skills, although I reference the Marsh sisters one out of South Dakota (Our
Unicycle Page or a similar title) fairly frequently. A hardcopy text is nice to
have for reference, or for when you feel like looking at a book instead of a
screen. If you’re interested in mountain unicycling, I think that the internet
is one of the only sources of literature available (and, to my knowledge, none
of it is in printed form).

Good luck!
