Blew first date by bringing uni

Indeed. I had one girlfriend where pretty much every date was a bike ride (although there was one date where we did a 13 mile unicycle ride together).

Sounds more fun to me than the standard dinner date, specially if you’re riding somewhere with nice scenery/places to sit about

As a biigg cycling lover/advocate (of both one and two wheels) I’d be a bit saddened to hear a woman I’m potentially dating wasn’t interested. It’s one thing to not share a hobby, but cycling is a way of life :sunglasses:

I wasn’t sure if that’s why some might find it an odd date. It’s interesting to find out what is considered a good date or not. To me it would be one centered around an activity that both find interesting.

My first date with my husband was an all day hike at a local mountain. Besides forgetting to wear enough sun screen it was a great date. We’ve been together for 21 years and have done many hikes, rides and camping trips since.

Aw, John, Don’t burst my bubble! That T-shirt is right on. Anyone done a survey on which size uni attracts the ladies? My unofficial experience is that a 20" is a deterrent when ridden along a bike path. Definite negative energy. Clowny. You’ll get the same stares as the guy wearing a bow-tie with a suit in Studio 54.
A 24" is neutral… gets attention but that’s about it.
A mountain 26 seems to be the best chick magnet, especially a KH for some reason. Maybe it’s the cool blue. It’s like the muscle car on the trail. You can still sort of stand next to it and look cool, one foot stylishly resting on a pedal…très Rico Suave.
A 29 is starting to be too big. Like a lady carrying a too big purse.
A 36" gets eye rolls like you’re driving a Ford Escalade. Or a Hummer.
Pimping out your ride with cool pedals, cranks, etc may help. I haven’t done that.
A pic with a uni on Tinder? Maybe.

This is funny.

While on the bike paths around town, I tend to get looks of amusement and/or annoyance when on my 24". If I’m only 29", I feel like I get an occasional look of admiration (most often from small children or their mothers). Oddly enough, on my 36", looks of terror or disbelief are more common. I guess there is just something frightening about a 300lbs man speeding at you on a giant, out-of-control, wheel-of-death.

You definitely need to post a picture of this! LOL

One of my earliest dates (but not my first one) with my wife was a bike ride - 30 or so miles and we got to know each other better.

On a date before that,we went walking and I briefly took my uni out of the car and did a quick once round the car park and she says even now that she was impressed.

But turning up on a bicycle ride with a uni is just asking for trouble.

However, if his date was the one who publicised it, he’s better off without them.

I’m surprised the guy in the radio broadcast didn’t chime in. He mentioned the strength of our unicycle community on the radio. He definetly uses this forum. By the way, the couple met in a spin class at a health club. I thought a bike ride would have been appropriate, she just wasn’t expecting the Uni.

I have anguished over this serious problem ever since I read the original post.

That’s awesome. Made my day.

Prepare for another bubble to get burst, but I think you’re reading waaay too much into the reactions of people watching you ride. Like people who ascribe human needs and ideas on to their dogs (or cats I suppose), assuming they want what people want.

Here’s the basic gist of what non-unicyclists percieve when they see various unicycle sizes:
20": “A person on a unicycle”
24": “A person on a unicycle”
26": “A person on a unicycle”
29": “A person on a unicycle”
36": “A person on a really big unicycle”
5’ or 6’ Giraffe: “A person on 3m/10’ tall unicycle”
A unicyclist surprising his date with a unicycle: “A person on his last-and-only date with that other person”

So size doesn’t matter! That’s what they keep telling me.

John,

I’m with you up to the giraffe. Regular people DO NOT view giraffe riders as regular people. While a few women might go for a ride with you if you show up with a 36" uni, it’s a very rare women who will be seen riding with a giraffe rider. The average person sees that as a circus act escapee.

Be well!

Hi Mike,

This brings back memories of giving a co-ed a ride after a college party. We stopped in a shopping center and I unicycled while juggling in the empty parking lot. She later said that I won her heart in that moment …

Be well!

Billy

Did someone already say that to women, size matters?

We might start a whole new thread on what uni riders think is bizarre. I think we’d have a skewed sample. Look, John (who is actually pretty conventional, despite his huge uni collection) thinks the general public views a rider on a giraffe uni a regular guy.

The neighbors had seen me uni-ing/juggling for several years. Then, when I briefly owned/rode a giraffe in 1974-6, I saw the neighbors’ eyes pop out of their heads. Keep your eyes out for that reaction if you want to know what normal is and when you’ve crossed a line.

Fondly,

Billy

While this isn’t my 36, your post provided the inspiration for the picture!

LMAO! The football gear is great. People are sure to get the hell out of your way when you’re flying by on that thing.

I love it! You will definitely NOT get the usual “WYOW” comments looking like that! More like “Clear a path!”
Carry on!
