i Was thinking, why not build a uni with a moto x front or back tyre and wheel setup? loads of air volume would mean capability to do bigger drops etc. Yes, i know, it would be heavy and wide, but it could be an interesting project. Any thoughts?
I’ve considered this before. The a rear motocross tire would be about the right diameter, and really wide.
You run motocross tires at really low pressures (8-10 psi) on a 200+ lb dirt bike, I imagine you could run them with no pressure on a uni as the tire is so stiff.
As mentioned, it would be heavy and wide, resulting in a wide frame too (Read: knee knocker).
I’m not sure how you would interface the wheel with unicycle cranks and the frame, though I’m sure its possible.
My guess is the whole unicycle would weigh in at 30+ pounds making it not really feasible for most types of riding.
They also make “trials motorcycles” and of course trials tires. These might be smaller/lighter whiles still wider than anything available for bikes/unis. Could be worth looking into. If I recall GasGas is a reputable manufacturer of trials motorcycles.
Re: Big drop uni
I have a few pics on my hard disk (picked up once from the www) of
what seems to be a home-built giraffe with a VERY wide tyre (like 10"
or so). From the looks of it, the contraption is way to heavy to jump
effectively with it. Drops? Maybe but not optimal.
Total is 3 pics, 2 files, 136 kB. Want them e-mailed?

Re: Big drop uni
If that’s the 3 speed one that appeared at '99 California Muni weekend, it
was either 60 or 80 pounds (I forget). It was also tall, scary and made of
WOOD - not really suited to drops, that’s for sure. I don’t remember the
guy’s name who built it either, but it was pretty wild. You had to stop it
to shift gears - by moving the drive belt.

Re: Big drop uni
Looking at the pics again it might be wood indeed - I had assumed it
was square metal tubing. The guy’s name is possibly Robert Flynn, as
this is the name of one of the pics. A gear-shifting mechanism is not
obvious on the photos but I can imagine it’s there.
