Big Bend Area. Where to Muni?

Looks like I’m going to be in the Big Bend, TX area for the weekend (sleeping in Fort Stockton).

Any comments/suggestions on where (not) to Muni ride in the area? (Or suggestions who to contact, etc ?)

.duaner.

If I had known earlier that you were going I would have sent the material I bought when I lived in Houston for a while. I went to the REI in Houston, I think it was, and got some good maps and “Big Bend Official National Park Handbook” which is excellent but doesn’t mention cycling. There are lots of 4WD roads and a guide is called “A Road Guide to Backcountry Dirt Roads of Big Bend National Park” which can be purchased at Panther Junction, which is the main Visitor Center. I don’t have anything here that would say what trails are open to cycling.

Oh and you will need lots of water.

Dave are you related to Ft Stockton, near Big Bend?

the following for future reference:

last weekend duaner and i explored places to ride out in big bend national park and the lajitas/ terlingua area. here’s what we found out.

  • there are no legal single track trails in the national park. you can ride on anything that a car can legally drive on. duane and i found an unmaintained jeep road that was very scenic and fun to ride on, although not extremely technical. cokers are more appropriate for riding in the national park. it would have been great to get around faster and farther. plus, maybe a coker could outrun mountain lions or bears.

  • near the lajitas international airport there are trails to ride on with challenging single track. we found this thanks to the guy at Desert Sports in Terlingua.

  • we also found out that some trails are opening soon in the state park near lajitas and terlingua.

Hmmm Not that I know of. I don’t know much about that side of things.

Sounds like a great trip! I enjoy that desert scenery.

Duaner, put a post up over at BikeMojo in the Raspa forum. Quite a few of my mtb friends frequently go to the big bend area and are familiar with Muni through me and S-Wallis. I’m sure they’d offer advice from their experiences. Tell them Kenny sent ya’

Uhhm, nope.
