Between me and my unicycles: Life

SO I haven’t been around much lately.

Life’s got me pretty busy. 'tween bad knees, a super guy in my life (who doesn’t ride, but is really great anyway) and three jobs, riding and posting have been distant memories. I’ll be back in the saddle when my knee situation straightens out, literally…

So this thread is about what gets between you and your unicycles.

What in your life trumps unicycling? The good, the bad, and the ugly?

The good.
Well a good thing is that i still have my unicycles and they always inspire me to conquer new things. So even if i’m at work. I always know that i have something to look forward to do when i get home and become bored doing nothing.

The bad.
Is when i’m at work so much. That when i get home, i’m wrecked and just want to sleep rather then unicycle.

The ugly.
Is when me or my friends gets seriously injured to the point of where we can’t unicycle at all. Normally when that happens, my mind keeps telling me never to unicycle again.

You should teach Super Guy to unicycle! Then he’d be Super-Duper Guy.

I also haven’t unicycled seriously for a long time…I spent most of the past two summers (and all of next one hopefully) doing Northwest Youth Corps, basically you go live in the woods for six weeks at a time doing environmental conservation work. No time for unicycling there…and now it’s winter, so unicycling is very difficult now as well.

Mainly work and weather. I cannot do anything about the weather but in about 3 months, I am going to retire from my employer of 31 years.

Blake, what happened to your knee? Did I miss a post?

B2T: I’m pretty lucky in that I’ve been able to ride pretty regularly the last four years, especially road riding. Generally, only one of three things has come between me and my unicycles:

  1. Weather: Seattle in the winter time; nuff said.

  2. Injury: My broken toe last spring and some other problems this fall sidelined me for a while.

  3. Sloth: I’m a creature of habit, and once I let myself get out of the riding (or exercise) habit it’s tough to get regular again. October --> April is tough.

My knees have been dogging me for a while.

The doc says that my thighs are not muscularly balanced and my kneecaps, as a result, don’t properly track, they push to the outside of the joint.

I just found this out today. The corrective measure amounts to wearing some substantial braces that hold the kneecap put and doing some physical therapy. I always thought kneecaps were a silly idea, know i see they were just a bad one. That’s my argument for unintelligent design. :stuck_out_tongue:

I also will be getting an MRI of my right hip and foot, which indicated some trouble in exray and when he manipulated the joints.

Getting old. :frowning:

I haven’t unicycled for three days now, due to the stress produced while trying to learn unispins. :stuck_out_tongue:
i still can’t do them

The good:
Music, music, poetry and music.
The bad:
Lack of motivation.

School.
Stress.
Swimming.

I wish I had more time to uni.

I had the exact same thing. My knee really started hurting during the second day of my RTL qualifying ride. I rode through the pain to get back to my camp and the next day I could not walk. My knee was really bad for a while and I went to five difrent doctors who all said that there was nothing wrong with my knee and I just had to rest it. I knew this was total BS after the first few doctors because I had been resting it for a month or so. The sixth doctor finally knew what he was talking about and within a couple minutes of seeing me he told me I had a muscle imbalance with the Vastus Medialis being weaker than the rest of my quads. He told me to lay on a bed put a pillow under my knee and then straiten my leg, do 3 sets of 10 for each side 3 times a day and two days later my knees no-longer hurt. I was amazed how quickly my pain went away after being basically debilitated for over a month. I still do 3 sets of 10 every day but not 3 times a day anymore, to make sure it doesen’t happen again.

The doctor said that this muscle imbalance is fairly common with bikers and runners.

What physio do they have you doing? It might help others with the same problem

Not having a seatpost was keeping me off the uni for quite a while (or at least that was the excuse I give). Mostly weather (again another poor excuse), work, and holiday stuff.

I was really sad because Today and Yesterday were amazing days to ride, but I didn’t have my trials uni built up and its the only one I can easily bring to work. I’m really hoping it doesn’t rain tomorrow so I can ride during my break. If that doesn’t happen, then I’m going to clear out my basement and ride all night long.

Weather. I can’t ride for 4+ months a year due to snow, ice, and freezing tires (broke my shoulder due to a frozen tire). I envy anyone who can ride year round.

between me and my unicycle: pants.

My girlfriend. I don’t mind not riding so I can be with her.

Band practices and shows, which I don’t mind either.

Yeah, those are the two main things that take up my time. Lately it has been snowboarding and the snow.

Its not bad though, as I don’t obsess over unicycling. Its always there when i want to ride it.

the good:
unicycling has a zenifying effect on my mind. (and is probably slowing the “getting old” effect).

the bad:
unicycling is addictive. (only excessive heat could stop me).

so my family has ambivalent views of the thing.

the ugly: it did hurt me a lot (broken two toes and a finger, broken an achille’s tendon + lots of other bruises and muscular problems + bouts of asthma) … a thing that never occured to me in other sports (including crazy skiing and karate).

I don’t get the unis out much anymore. Things get in the way. Mostly good things though. Kids, commuting and fixing the house take up most of the time I used to spend on unicycling.

Good, bad or ugly?
Kids are good, except that they take no interest in unicycling (yet)
Commuting is mostly bad, but I get a lot of reading done.
The house is ugly, but we’re working on it.

I’ve been sick for 10 days now. Went unicycling for first time this yesterday. It was cool! But I couldn’t ride for long. Still, I stuck a hickflip. Today I’m gonna get them!

Work during the day. University in the evenings and weekends (I’m a part-timer).
Short days. I live ~54ºN. Sunrise today wasn’t until 8:26, and sunset will be 16:02, but they’re getting longer  . I hate riding by street light and muni in the dark is just one UPD after another.
But I’m such an addict that I’ll idle and ride around my flat in the evenings.

Cars, my girlfriend and the weather.

My cars take up a lot of my free time and money. I spend a lot of time with my girlfriend, like Jerrick I don’t mind, just don’t get much time to ride.
The weather. What can I say? The weather is always shit in England.
