People are always saying, including myself, things like “the forums are better now that…” or “the forums were better back when…”
But what does better really mean? There is no ‘stated’ objective of these forums(as far as I know), so further accomplishing an objective to become better is not possible. However, becoming better just means having a greater quality. Also, notice the com-munity? It isn’t just there becauser it has “muni” in it…
Essentially, having a better community would mean creating a higher quality group of people(and in our case, posts)having common interests(ie: Unicycling, etc.).
But what’s higher quality? Or quality for that matter? How do you see a Quality Unicycling Community? Good spelling? Everyone being nice? Or what? For that matter, what do you regard as a quality post?
Let me know what you think. But try to make a post that contains what you’ve deemed as quality, as well as describes it.
I think that if people keep posting things that they’d like to see, with examples, rather than saying that they don’t like this or that, that people will be able to use this to make higher quality posts, and therefore, better forums.
Only people who own UPD t-shirts make quality posts and the only posts they make are of the highest quality. This is because they were wise enough to purchase UPD shirts when they had the opportunity. These are quality individuals with quality tastes. Spelling, punctuation, grammar…toss it all out. Bacon is more important in the end…exept for UPD shirts.
I prefer posts that have capitalization and complete sentences, even if they may be about nothing. I have trouble reading bad posts and it takes longer for me to read the threads. I don’t mide pointless posts in certain threads, however. cough cough, MR
I think a good forum is where everyone is nice to each other, and people don’t necessarily type perfectly, but they at least write well enough so we can understand what they’re saying.
I popped over to the bike trials forum the other day when someone mentioned they were talking about us. I have to agree, we’ve got some quality folks here compared to what I saw and read over there.
The use of tact and diplomacy (and understatement) when criticizing.
The feeling of being at home with friends and family and kindred spirits.
Posts where some effort was expended, especially in RSU and especially when starting a thread (or when in one of the more thought-provoking or serious threads).
(For example, when asking for help, try to type more than one poorly-written sentence that is totally devoid of punctuation, correct spelling, and grammar. If you didn’t bother spending any time or effort asking for help, then why should I spend any of MY time or effort to respond?)
You mean you’re too busy trying to decipher others people’s cryptic posts, because they apparently don’t care if people can comprehend what they are saying.
I kind of see it as how much I enjoy coming to this site and whether it’s useful to me, even if it’s mindless blabber in JC. This site went way downhill back in the day when Gilby pulled the pictures out of the sigs and certain individuals decided to protest. I took off and didn’t visit this site for over a year when that happened. Now that issue has been dealt with and this site is back where it should be. So it’s better now than it was then, and i think it’s better now than it was way back before that all happened, since there’s more users now and it moves a little faster. When I joined it was relatively slow.
