best way to view newsgroup?

I’m new here. I’m using rec:sport:unicycle through the google groups
page, and reading everything right on the page. Now i’m hearing there
are other ways. Can I do it through e mail? Is this easyer? I’m on a
yahoo group to stay in contact with my large extended family, it runs
soley though e/m, could rec, sport.unicycle be similar? would i view
all threads or just what i select or reply to? can it be better viewed
through unicyclist.com?? what are the advantages/disadvantages to
what? what is easyest for most people? and how do i go about doing
whatever i decide to do?

I like viewing the page from unicyclist.com i have no complaints with it. Everything is easy to find and there is always a plethera of info arround. Thanks Gilby

Google Groups is one way, Unicyclist.com is another. You can also subscribe to the list and receive it via email. I used to get the list by email, but since I don’t have to mess with dial up any more I’m using unicyclist.com.

This is the link to sign up for email…

Hey Trev, welcome to RSU!

There are basically 3 different ways to access rec.sport.unicycling, that being email, usenet newsgroup, and web-based.

E-mail
Advantages

  • Goes right in your inbox.
  • Can archive it on your own.
  • Flexibility in email client selection.

Disadvantages

  • Has been sporadic lately on sending out emails.
  • Large volume of messages to sort through.
  • Annoyance of hitting reply instead of reply all resulting in response not going to the list.

If you use the email list, you’ll want to make sure to set up some filters to sort the RSU email into its own folder instead of it going into your inbox. this will help you sort through what is from teh newsgroup and what is your personal email.

Newsgroup
Advantages

  • Redundant servers to access it from.
  • Can archive it on your own.
  • Flexibility in news client selection.

Disadvantages

  • Might not have access to a server.
  • Might not have or know how to use a news client.

Web-based
There are a couple web-based options, that being google and unicyclist.com.
Advantages

  • Has advanced formatting for richer content and is converted to formatted plain text when going to the newsgroup and email. (unicyclist.com)
  • Archive back to 1993 when the list began. (unicyclist.com and google?)
  • Fast search through the archives. (unicyclist.com and google)
  • Access to forum members profiles to get to know a little about the posters that post fromthe forum. (unicyclist.com)
  • Can attach images, and other files, without causing problems with people downloading it in their email. (unicyclist.com)
  • Spam is manually deleted if it makes it in. (unicyclist.com)

Disadvantages

  • Depends on the unicyclist.com server being up. (unicyclist.com)
  • Can't archive it easily yourself. (unicyclist.com and google)
  • Stuck with the layout and format of the site. (unicyclist.com and google)

So, just figure out which one is best for your needs and join in on the discussions!

Re: best way to view newsgroup?

I use a newsreader. I’ve noticed sometimes that
replies are not correctly associated with their parent.
This makes it harder to follow threads as the news
reader can’t construct a proper tree.

Obviously this can be caused by people replying to
the wrong posts, but I wondered whether the email
or web options could lead to this. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Arnold the Aardvark

I prefer web-based through unicyclist.com than e-mail or news group, it’s always formatted correctly and in order. I haven’t tried google though but I have no desire to as I think Gilby is doing a great job, Thanks.

I’ve just started using the unicyclist.com forums… mainly because the news server I used appears to have stopped picking up new r.s.u. messages, and secondly so I can have a silly picture of a legoman on my posts.

I still use the newsgroup back at home. It gets confusing how the newsgroup shows them as threaded correctly but because the forum is just a single thread things go weird when forum people talk to newsgroup people. It gets kinda hard to follow…

Phil, just me

The legoman is anything but silly. You have made a great and lasting contribution with that exquisite avatar.

You don’t realise how long it took to airbrush out the underpants on his head and the pencils in his ears.

Most people seem to prefer reading via unicyclist.com. Let me just add
another disadvantage (that may not apply to you): you can only read
and post while online. E-mail and usenet access by contrast let you
read and post offline*, so for a dial-in connection would be preferred
in my view.

    short bursts of online activity.

Re: best way to view newsgroup?

I have to tell you that you are all truly great people and i am proud
to have become a part of such a great community.

I have jsut subscribed to the e/m thing, mainly cause i havnt gotten
much e/m lately taht issnt spam. I would enjoy the possibility of
importaint messages actualy outmassing the spam. Ill try that for a
while and see how it goes. I think ill also try using unicyclist.com,
see what i prefer. thanks for your help.

trevor

ps. sucks that somebody on the group already uses the name “trev”. I
dont tend to use my full first name much for this kinda thing.

its all about the Avitar, baby not to mention the big letter options,oh yea the colors are cool to.

Re: best way to view newsgroup?

also, i prefer the e/m format for responces. it is much more friendly then
google ie. you dont have to sign in everytime you want to reply. google is
slighly difficult to navigate.

Re: best way to view newsgroup?

After a few hrs of subscribing through e/m i am seeing some dissadvantages.
1 being an overwhelming amount of e/m in you’re inbox. I’m using aol, so of
course filters and folders and whatnot are not available. also i’m having
trouble with folowing threads and order. however, its all here in front of
me, i pretty much have to read everything so the knoledge and ideas being
hurled at, through and over me defenetly helps feed the obsession.

RE: best way to view newsgroup?

Wow, you are brave to do the newsgroup by email on AOL. I respect and pity
you. Actually I feel sorry for all AOL subscribers unless they are beginners
with computers. One should not stay in preschool too long, because the
teachers there will try to shield you from the real world.

AOL’s email system is good for maybe a maximum of 10 messages a day. It’s
really hard to save anything, and each message has to be handled with lots
of clicks. There are free email clients out there, but I don’t know if there
are any that will work with AOL…

Stay on top,
JF

I have plenty of free e/m accounts. I tend to use aol anyway because of the
interface, and i dont have to change applications to check e/m and us IMs.
Also, its nice how everythng can be done with keyboard shortcuts. for
instence, i want to view the next message, i hit the right arow, rather then
having to go back a page and click on the next artical. Plus I never really
save e/m anyway. but it would be nice if it had filters and whatnot. Still,
i would be ashamed of myself if i ever heard myself defending aol, so lets
pretend we never had this conversation.

at 1$/5min. usualy they let me stay as long as i buy a hamburger as well.

Re: Re: best way to view newsgroup?

Hey Trev, Here’s a tip for you from a former aol user…
*Go to AOL keyword “newsgroups” and sign up for rec.sport.unicycling there if you want to receive rsu by “email.” When I was on aol I found that this worked pretty good.
*You can also set up your “Flash Sessions” to download the Newsgroup and send any postings or replys that you might have. When the rsu posts are downloaded, I found that aol did a fairly good job of giving each thread its own folder and this made it a lot easier to sift through everything.

Hope this improves your RSU viewing pleasure!

gosh, what a pain in the arse.is there one good reason to not just become a member?everything is in rows by topic.it does’nt get any better than that.

Klass Bill,im sure you have a good reason and i would respect your opinion.i’m just curious.
