Most avatars don’t sit still long enough to take notice. It’d be tough to pick from a constantly changing field.
You might want to consider categories, i.e., funniest, most creative, best of theme, etc.

I think my avatar is best, it’s unique and related to the forum’s main subject. Also does not change very often so I am easy to spot.
