I´m tired of hitting my ankles all the time, and no basket/skate shoes how goes up over the ankles has a good sole. Adidas superstar is the only shoes i know that have a sole that lasts more than six months… i´ve been considering buying sixsixone ankle guards, but they are probably very clumbsy, are they?
I am using 661 Race Braces and some very cheap high top shoes for Muni and they are great. This combination not only protects you from crank hits but also from ankle sprains (and the shoes do not have to give a lot of support because they are only an addition to the 661s. Unfortunately the 661 take quite a while to put on that’s the downside.
Go try on some soccer shin guards with the removeable ankle protector/heel stirrup. They fit on over your socks, just cover the ankles with a rubber donut, comfortable and they don’t get in the way.
You dont even need to find removable ones, you can just cut them off and sew them onto whatever leg protection you are using. If you dont use leg protection you can check out the 661 ankle biters. They attach to any pair of shoes and cover the ankle bone. I just use a pair of big adult soccer shin guards with ankle protection as is… about 3 years and still going… smell pretty bad, but well worth the 7 dollars.
But for real… dont expect any pair of shoes to stay in great working condition for more than 2 months. If its not grip its padding, if not padding its stitching… its a small price to pay for all you get from the sport.
