bent pedals

So, I replaced my bent cranks (I had another identical pair kicking around) and noticed that I’d apparently done something to the pedals (mine are Snafu) as well. Is it common to bend pedals? If so, is there a good solution? Or does it all get down to bad landing technique? (which I am sure was what contributed most to the bending in the first place)

Re: bent pedals

It is common to bend pedals. A good start would be pedals with a Co-Mo axle.
These tend to last much longer.

I seen to bend or break everything! Pedals, Cranks, Hubs, Frames, Seat Posts, Seats, Spokes and other peolpes unicycles  (especialy when where playing GLADIATORS!!! )

The Snafu pedals shouldn’t bend. They have forged heat treated chromoly spindles of a respectable diameter. Cheap pedals with wimpy spindles can bend, but the good BMX pedals like the Snafus should handle big drops without bending the spindle.

More likely you knocked something out of alignment inside the pedal. Tear the pedal apart and do an overhaul. The bearing may be knocked off center or something like that. Roll the spindle on a table to see if it is noticeably bent. If you have the unsealed (loose ballbearing) pedals an overhaul can be a PITA, but is still a good thing. If you have sealed bearings check to make sure that the bearing cartridge is in good condition and not about to fall apart.

Some pedals have an O-ring that helps seal the pedal and also put drag on the pedal so it doesn’t freespin. If the O-ring is dislodged or isn’t in good condition it can cause play in the pedal. When overhauling the pedal check any O-rings. I haven’t done an overhaul on my Snafu pedals yet so I don’t know what they have inside.

If the spindle is bent you should be able to get a replacement from Snafu. You might even be able to get it replaced under warranty. Check out <http://www.snafubmx.com/> for contact info.

Thanks for the tips. That’s definitely good stuff to know.

Oddly, though, the pedals seem to have repaired themselves. I don’t understand it, but I guess I’ll just let this one slide. There’s a little bit of play in the pedals, but that’s been there before… I would guess something was seated at an angle, and the act of riding knocked it back in place.

either that or you squashed a bearing.i would still open them up and take a peek around.
