While in New Zealand, I had the pleasure of riding with Tony Melton. As I had not brought down a uni of my own, I was forced to borrow one of Tony’s (thanks Tony). The uni I borrowed, a Trials, had a set of shortened bike cranks. The cranks were both bent and I had a very difficult time riding at first. But in no time I could barely notice the bent cranks. Is this normal?
BTW: Pics from my trip will be up soon. I’ll keep you posted.
I bet Tony can’t wait to upgrade his trials Uni into splines. I rode with bent cranks for so long that riding with straight cranks felt weird. You get used to it but surely you can’t go at your maximum speed, because the bends make you wobble. It’s so hard to resist the temptation to bend them, no matter how delicately you treat them they always tend to warp under the leverage.
I reckon you can get used to riding just about any bent cranks. Though it does make some tricks harder, such as riding along narrow walls.
I bent the old skool cottered cranks of my first unicycle so much that when one was in the 3 o’clock position the other was in the 8 o’clock position. I got used to these bent cranks, though no-one else I lent the uni to could ride it!
Yeah, I’m looking forward to a splined hub upgrade soon!
