wat is it?

the new mars volta CD.
there have been like 4 songs already released, for some reason.
and they are AMAZING.
their new drummer is insanity at its finest.

they are a good band. many of their influences are my favorite music, authors, and movies. that also presents a problem for my full enjoyment of their music. they’re starting to get a little too self-indulgent and their music runs the risk of getting shlocky and watered-down.

their first full-length was the best (Deloused in the Comatorium for those who don’t know). it had a perfect blend between energy and experimentation. the guitar fretwork wasn’t as overstated as jimmy page’s got when he played live with led zeppelin. that was good. the band has said they broke from At The Drive-In because they wanted to record their version of Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd album “Piper at the Gates of Dawn.” As soon as I heard Omar’s use of glissando with echo/delay I realized that there was a new band out there who enjoyed Syd’s music and experimental guitar playing as much as I. It did little to piss me off, and more to draw me in to their music.

but, a great deal of their music sounds heavily influeced by bitches brew era miles davis, john mclaughlin and his mahavishnu orchestra, and especially robert fripp (his tritone atonal guitar solos) and early king crimson, elements of ornette coleman and captain beefheart (all over in the sax playing on amputechture), and portions of the krautrock band Can. The list goes on.

speaking of king crimson. several of their songs, goliath being their latest one have a main riff that bears a marked resemblance to that of the king crimson song of their first lp (in the court of the crimson king) “21rst Century Schizoid Man” Their song Goliath, from their newest full-length is a slight variation of that king crimson riff in a different key (first chord a b instead of king crimson’s c).

anyway. i’ll wait and see how the full lp sounds before i pass further comments. these boys would be better off if they shed their influences. especially since that people who enjoy their music think so highly of them. I have thought very highly of them until their latest two releases. I honestly hope they do not go the way of shlocky prog bands of dinosaur rock bands in the mid-late 70s.

Oh
my god.

As i had expected, this cd is AMAZING.

Their muscianship is unparalled in music these days.
It is far beyond amazing, it’s so complex and out there.
The vocals might not be for everyone, but you have to have MAD respect for the music they put out.

Only one man was insanity at his finest.

Just sayin’

I want this one!! I heard a bit of it… Some of it reminded me of Charles Mingus for some reason.
