I just started picking up uni’ing again after 20 years. I saw that Japanese girl on youtube in the all Japan competition and felt that I had to get one again. After a couple days of reading threads I bought a Torker 20. My co-workers laughed at me “not exactly a chick magnet thing” they claimed. How wrong they were.
I am riding around Mission beach San Diego. Before I leave the parking lot, I get honked at and howled at. I get to the boardwalk and theres children chasing after me. And then another howl from an unseen female. As I am reaching my limit (about 1/2 mile before I fall over panting), I feel a pinch on my butt from a passing rollerblader and a wink–which also almost made me do a headplant. I rest up for a few minutes and decide that I am still too weak to ride the whole boardwalk on a 20 and head back. This time I get chased by a dog and honked at again by another passing motorist while I am on the sidewalk back to my truck. Call it luck I guess. I am not sure if these things happen to you guys as well?
I think it would have been more fun if I had a riding buddy in San Diego. It got me thinking, “Wouldn’t it be fun if there was a group of us in Venice Beach riding down the boardwalk for an event?” I’d certainly drive up to make the trip.
But I am not too great at it since I’ve only re-started riding for 2 weeks. Now, I wished I’d put in an order for a cruiser along with the Nimbus II longneck w/Kovachi wheel w/Fusion Air I have on order.
Anyways it’s just my two cents on what might be a fun event for the unicycle community.
I ride the beach bike path (near venice) quite a lot on my 36-er, and there are several of us who get togther for fun beach rides quite often, so yeah, you should try to join us. I would suggest maybe getting a bigger wheeled uni for long rides though. I just did a 25 miler yesterday from the beginning of Torrance Beach (S) to the Marina Del Rey Bridge (N) and back! It was crazy fun, but extremely tiring…in a good way though!
But anyway, there’s nothing quite like Cokering for miles and miles on the beach bike path! PM me if you have any questions or want to plan a ride. Welcome to the forums!
I’d like to come up there when I pick up more stamina and a cruiser and go distance riding with you guys. I just ordered a freestyle uni, so I am a bit money shy at the moment to drop down for another few hundred. If I had to get a nice cruiser for beach rides on the boardwalks, what would you suggest for under $300?
You really want a coker for long rides, although some prefer the lighter weight 29-er. You can get a really inexpensive Sun 28" which is basically the same as the 29-er in wheel size. But overall, I would highly recommend a 36er.
You could keep your eye out for a used one on ebay, or you could just buy a brand new radial 36 from udc for $339. That’s what I bought, but with the airfoil rim and lighter, SSteel spokes.
