the avatar has to have a clear layer…
GIF images have a feature where you can select a color to be transparent. So, in your case you create an animated GIF image where the white area has been made transparent.
There is an online GIF editor that will allow you to edit the image and set a transparent color.

There is no impostoring going on. I have never complained about the size of the avatars here. 60x60 is not too big. I have complained about animated avatars. If I ever put up an animated avatar then you can call me an impostor.

I had been meaning to fix up my avatar for a long time. The new version better shows the distinct shape of the Guinness pint glass. It looks better.
