Well, I know we have a lot of engineers on here so I figured I could start an AutoCAD thread. Talk about your projects, ask for help on certain things, or post some sweet renderings. Not just AutoCAD either, SolidWorks and Inventor as well. Here’s some renderings of an oval tubed trials frame I made out of boredom. Give me something to model!
hi
could you model me a 36 er frame in 3d and dimension it up for me
I have to ask some things, namely:
What kind of tire clearance do you want?
What bearing spacing do you want?
What seatpost size do you want?
What kind of tubing do you want?
What size bearings do you want?
Do you want a round, square, or semi flat crown?
Do you want Magura brake mounts, no brake mounts, or Cantilever Brake mounts?
Do you want me to make seperate pages for different parts? (Ie. The bearing blocks on a seperate page for a machinist and the frame on a seperate page for a welder)
What thickness of tubing do you want?
Do you want tapered or regular frame legs?
I’ve never done much auto-cad stuff, but I’ve dabbled in the more organic-style software suites, namely Blender 3D. I used to have a few things I’ve done but my computer has been wiped since then and I haven’t really gotten back into it. This thread might re-inspire me!
I tried Blender before and I just couldn’t get into it. I’ll stick to AutoCAD, much simpler for me.
I’ve got a couple ideas in mind for some projects I’d like to start, so I’ll post updates here when I get something worth showing.
SolidWorks geek here. Are you keeping up with the material properties? It would be good to get component weight, etc when a design is finished.
How about a place to file away IGES files for anyone to pull in of the various components? Someone with FEA analysis could really compare designs. I don’t have access any more to FEA since changing companies.
heres some stuff i have done in cinema 4d and solid works. cinema isnt an engineering program but still 3d modeling .

This is about 2 hour’s work today and this morning on my newest project:
It still looks pretty generic right now, but I have a specific goal in mind - it’s gonna be a scene from this book series I’m in (I’ll post the passage if you guys want). Also I know it’s not all that good but I haven’t done any modeling for almost a year, so I’m pretty rusty. Critiques welcome.
ah man i really dont like blender. i dont think i could make that in blender. especialy not in 2 hours. it would be pretty easy in cinema or 3ds but i gues its all user preferance.
this was made in a program callt hypercad work like inventor
did not draw al of this design myself but have workt on it
i’am now learning to work with inventor on school
the basics are the same as hypercad so its nice to work with
i actually did build the frame alsow but will post some pictures of that in a other thread
I don’t have an FEA program onhand. Right now if I need weight or anything like that I just use my little black book, a calculator, and the old noggin. Isn’t there an FEA analysis program built into Inventor? If I was better at inventor I’d know.
This is a rendering of a project I made in Blender a few months ago.
Blender internal render engine? Pretty nice.
Polarbear, that KH render looks awesome! Blender seems like a really difficult program to learn. Is this composited onto an actual photo, or are the textures really that realistic?
Here’s what I’ve been working on. The first picture is my old Torker CX 24, drawn in Solidworks. (With half of the spokes missing. This one is a few years old, and I lost my final version of it.)
I’m currently working on drawing my Nimbus Trials and KH29 in Inventor 2008.
The second pic is what I have so far on the Nimbus. I got tired of trying to loft the saddle shape, so it probably won’t be finished any time soon.
