Four Australian trials riders including myself are doing some trials demos at the 2004 Australian Bike Show in October. It’s going to be fantastic and we’re planning the course now. We should be able to get them to build us some bits and pieces for specific needs and also use some of the stuff that the bike trials demo team are using. It’ll be good to meet some of Australia’s best bike trials riders there.
I’ve just drawn up a really rough sketch of a possible layout. Any suggestions or comments would be much appreciated. I had a look through this old thread and once again found Kris’ suggestions very helpful. I’m really just letting you know what we’re going to be doing because I’m excited about it.
A bit about this first course idea…
- The launch ramp is for rolling hops/gaps up onto boxes, the other ramp you see is steeper and for a transition on the 2m drop.
- The curvy line of sandwich boards would actually be facing out towards the edge of the area so the riders would hop around it and go nearer to the crowd.
- The ladder you see will have round rungs spaced about 40-50cm apart.
- The grind rail and boxes will be set up so you can drop onto the grind from the higher boxes or hop up to the grind from the lower ones. There are two rails parallel for grinding with one crank on each which should be pretty fun.
Or you can grind just one side for more of a challenge.
- The widely spaced boxes will have a 30cm beam for wheel walking (1 or 2 foot) and backwards riding across and a 30-40mm wide rail (flat probably so we know we’ll make it across) for slow technical rail riding. Maybe if it’s a little shorter than 4m I’ll try riding it backwards.
- That diagram is missing the narrow gapping bars I want built. I’d like two at about 50cm high (for higher gaps) and two at about 30cm high (for 180’s and distance gaps).
Pretty exciting hey! We’re going to do a really good job of this and all train to work on general trials and also on our specific strengths. We’ll be representing www.unicycles.com.au and these demos will hopefully help to promote unicycling in Australia.
