A guy who works for me has learned how to ride and I’ve set him up with a MUni made from oddball bits and pieces I have laying around. He hasn’t been riding very long but he’s getting along pretty well.
Last night I brought the geared uni in to the shop and we took it out in the parking lot so he could try it. I told him that if he was going to ride it, now is the time since it will be gone soon. He did surprisingly well in 39" mode. He rode it around and got the feel of it, then we switched to 26" mode. The difference in the way it rides in the two different gears is huge. He couldn’t mount in 26" mode at first.
Afterwords he said something like “I’ve got to have one of those!”. I have a machine shop with all the tools and set of Harper’s drawings … there’s nothing stopping him from making one for himself.
I’m very sorry to report that Greg slipped on a bar of soap shortly after posting and will not be able to handle this transaction. While I’m real-ly too busy to handle something like this, Greg is such a swell guy that, when he called from the hospital, I had no choice but to accept this grave responsibility.
PM me for an address to send the money to. I prefer 20’s, but don’t rip one in half to make the 30, just throw in a 10.
Good news- the soap is expected to pull through. We can all sleep easy.
I was expecting the unicycle to go for over $1000. $930 seems like a good deal. Congratulations Mike.
So how many Harper hubs are out in the wild now? And who has them? I think there are four.
Greg Harper has on on the 29er Blue Shift
Someone (I can’t remember who) got one at UNICON 11
Kris Holm has one on a Coker
And now Mike Scalisi has one on a SH flavored 26er.
Are there others? And who got the one at UNICON 11?
So who else really struggled over whether to bid or not? I came very close to bidding several times. For me, I’m worried about being sure that I’ll use it a lot as much as the money.
I’d have bought it for $930 in a second if I knew that I was going to keep up with my regular riding schedule and it wouldn’t go to waste.
In Tokyo Unicon 12 I had the chance to try out Jack Halperns Harper 24" Epicyclic- man that’s one cool ride!
Joel Penson (from Australia) and I took it for a quick ride- Joe was about to buy it but it was sold 5min earlier for US $450. Oh well, it would have been good to have had one of those unicycles down under.
I’ll make sure to keep you posted. Some have suggested that I use her for the California Coast Classic but unless I become super comfortable on her really quickly, I’ll probably still use my Hunter36.
I’m very excited. I’ll be sure to bring it to Cal Muni Weekend in case people want to try it.
