No need. We have the Dixie Chicks for that.

Nice thread.
Not being subscribed to any threads I have not experienced the trouble of phantom email notifications like Samuel and Foolish. I saw a thing on TV about the Dixie chicks. I am not particularly fond of their music but I was surprised at how they were treated for voicing their valid viewpoint. There is nothing wrong with being ashamed of your president. If America is the land of the free where free speech is your right, then the president should have congratulated the Dixie chick for speaking her mind while overseas. I thought it was pretty weak of the Dixie chick that she got so stressed out by the backlash that she resorted to patriotic attempts to win back the American public’s favour by saying that everyone should torture Osama Bin Laden. Isn’t democracy all about people having different views? Is that not why there is a vote? Because not everyone agrees so they go by the majority decision. There is no law that says you must agree with any particular political party. If she made an attack at Bush’s character you could understand him being defensive but she merely stated her own feelings about him coming from the same town. Many other people make far nastier criticisms about Bush’s competence as a leader without repercussion. In my opinion the United States of America needs to become more United with the United Nations. Unity can not work if it is confined within one nation.

One reason the Dixie Chicks got so much bad publicity is because country music fans tend to be a patriotic group. Country music is more popular out in the rural areas where people are proud to be an American. Many country music stations made a big deal about refusing to play the Dixie Chicks because of what they said, where they said it, and when they said it.

Freedom of speech does not mean that you will be free of criticism if you say something stupid or controversial. Freedom of speech lets you say what you want, but it does not guarantee that anyone will hear you or care about what you say. There is also no guarantee or right that people won’t disagree with you.

The Dixie Chicks blew it because they forgot who their fans were back home in the USA. Their fans at home were waving the flag while the Chicks were out in Europe somewhere apologizing for being an American.

OK.

BLAH BLAH BLAH.

I’ve waited, and nobody has come forward to tell this new guy, “XWonka”, who can’t be bothered to read the archives, that I’m an American, too.

So… for your information, “XWonka”, I’m an American, too, and I’ve been at it longer than you have.

Oh, yeah… and a “mean” one, at that!

This forum has readers and posters from all over the globe, so it’s a good place to get an international sense of humanity… at least the unicycling-brand of humanity.

If you want to run off and post things like

well, OK…

Freedom of Speech, and all that.

Freedom of speech means that the government isn’t going to use their guns to keep you from saying what you want. I don’t think that it should guarantee that no one will critisize your opinions. I don’t listen to the Dixie Chicks either, but it has been interesting to watch it all play out. Personally I think to many entertainers try to be polititians from their stages, rather than doing what they are paid to do entertain. If I disagree with them when they are on stage, TV, Radio etc… promoting whatever political cause of the day they have been convinced is corrrect, the only way I can make my self heard is to choose not to spend my hard earned $$$ on their records, movies, etc… In the Dixie Chicks case, they were quickly reminded that there job is to sing and entertain, not spout off about just any old thing that pops into their mind. There are people who will disagree, and since they can’t do it on a stage in front of thousands, they do it with their $$$.

didnt one of the Dixie chunks spout off somthing else stupid last night at the country music awards?

i heard that one of them did,but i didnt hear what…

Sure did Jagur. But what I recall in my morning newspaper that they didn’t show up, but performed a live via satellite from Austin Texas.

Same too here jagur. I wonder what they said too.
Besides I’m a fan of the Dixie Chicks. But I mainly a huge fan of Leann Rimes and Shania Twain. I love country music too besides Rock and Roll and Pop Music.
