How many of you are interested in unicross racing?
Unicross racing is just like cyclocross racing but on unicycles if anyone is wondering what this is. Racers will race around a marked outdoor course in specific distanced laps for a determined amount of time and will have a cretin number of barriers that will require the racer to dismount their unicycle and jump over the barrier manually and then remount their unicycle to continue the unicross race. I am thinking about having a unicross race this fall in the Knoxville TN area and want to know how many people are interested in unicross racing and how many people would be interested in attending this race to see if it is worth peoples effort to go through with it.
I am interested in any suggestions for this unicross race. I want this race to be as fun as possible and worth attending.
Is 30 minutes to short of time for a race? Is 1 hour to long? What distance would people want one lap to be? What types of barriers would people want? Is there anything else that people would like to see going on at this event?
Great idea. How about 30 minutes on a circuit course, whoever does the most distance wins. Maybe have a rule for no walking/running for 20 yards before & after an obstacle.
sounds like fun but it is way to far for me to go for a short event.
Maybe I am just a sucker for punishment but I would think a race like this would be much better if it had a bit more distance/time. 4 hours would be fun.
I have thought about this as well after the discussion on running in XC unicycle races.
Thanks for the great response everyone! This is exactly what I am looking for! I want this unicross race to be as close to what you want it to be as I can.
Munimutant: The unicross race can be raced the same way cyclocross is done. We will race for 30 or more minutes plus 1 or 2 laps or whatever amount of time people want. Each lap for the course is usually 1 or 2 miles long and the most laps, or distance covered, wins. I have thought about rules that will make the race fair for everyone similar to what you have mentioned about racer’s being off of their unicycles.
Kalamazuni: Thank you for your interest in this unicross race. I will keep you informed as I find out more about peoples interest and what they would like to see in a unicross race.
Mikefule: You are too funny! LOL. I wish that you could attend. I am sure that you would have a fun time and keep everyone laughing. I have visited Nottingham and loved it. I was there right after Kevin Costner filmed “Robin Hood Prince of Thieves”.
Saskatchewanian: Thank you for your input. What distance would you be willing to travel this far for? I have thought about holding a 12 hour muni race similar to a 12 hour mountain bike race that is held here every year. Sound like your type of event? We could make it a 24 hour race! LOL.
I am open to any thoughts on any type of race that anyone would like to see offered, road or off road.
Tennessee is over 3000km away, I would probably consider going to a race like this if it was within a days drive, not much more than say 700-1000km away.
I can’t really see myself going hard for 12 or 24 hours strait, maybe if it was relay style. I said I was a sucker for punishment, not a masochist.
That sounds really awesome. To me, being in fairly bad shape and all, a longer event sounds like more fun. At least an hour, if not longer.
Why not just have a set distance, rather than a set time. That seems more intuitive to me, but maybe I’m just silly. I’d say at least 10 miles, probably more.
Oh, and I googled unicross, and I’m wondering if this is the official tire for racing
LOL. AsceXion those tires look like something out of a Mad Max film. Now that would definitely be one cool looking unicycle. The “ultimate” muni!
We could run the race for an hour. I am starting to lean more into that direction.
A unicross race is held the same way a cyclocross race is conducted, usually in a city park on the grass. It is a set course length, such as 1 mile or so, with riders riding as many laps as possible with in the specified time. If the course is 1 mile long and someone rides 10 laps in the hour then they have ridden 10 miles.
There will be barriers that riders will have to dismount their unicycles and jump over then remount and continue the race.
In cyclocross, races are categorized by skill level. Unicross doesn’t have any formal governing body that I am aware of (If you know of a governing body please let me know about it so that I can contact them), so how would I judge skill level? What I am thinking about doing is having categories by age group such as 20-29 as an example.
I am open to all suggestions. Unicross has no set rules and regulations that I know of, so I am making this up as I go.
Please tell your friends about this race. I am only going to have this race if I get enough interest to make it economically worth my effort to have the race.
