Hey, I’m going to be leaving for Australia on January 8th, and am arriving in Sidney on the 10th. I plan to travel, etc. and work when I get there, and plan to stay for at least 4 months. I wont be bringing a uni however… Does anybody have any work, or know anywhere an 18 year old canadian can get work easily? I am looking for anything really, and have a great resume. I’m looking for something on the gold coast. Thanks
oh you lucky, lucky bastard. you’ll love it down there. Absolutely LOVE it.
beautiful country. went on new years… gah… makes me sad thinking of why the heck did i leave? it was so great!
i wish i could come. There are plenty nice folks down under. Be sure to check out the back streets and stuff. I found a nice pub down there that i bought a schweppe’s lemonade thing every other day at lunchtime.
Come to Brisbane and I’m sure I’ll be able to track down a muni you can borrow for a muni ride or two. Well you can drive to Brisbane in an hour from the Gold Coast. Here in Australia an hour’s drive is considered not far at all.
I’m not sure about work, but you’d be able to find something.
hey dan,
I live in bathurst which is about 3hrs drive inland of Sydney. Dude i have to admit that the gold coast is overated- unless if course you enjoy the tacky scyscrapers butted up to the beach scene. If you want the best surf, lifestyle and cultural experience i’d advise the lowereast coast (anywhere south of sydney). It is there that you will fully get to know the laid back lifestyle we all would give a leg for if we could. I was just down in wollongong (Kiama to be specific) not a week ago and, shit you not, sat on a 7mile long pristine beach, had a few beers, and sent for a surf when i felt the urge. Whatever happens i’m sure you’ll have fun- if you end up shit creek my dad is always on the lookout for builders labourers,
Mark
P.S- i’m not sure if Canada is like the USA on its drinking ages but take full advantage of the legal drinking age (18) WOOOHOOOOOOOO
The Byron Bay/Ballina region is nice too. Byron gets busy, but you don’t have to travel far at all to get right away from all of that but still be close to good surf, etc. The nice thing about Byron (really nice!) is that there’s a limit on buildings next to the water that restricts them to 2 storeys. A fantastic idea, I reckon. Byron’s fun…but 5-10 years ago it was so much better.
Byron Bay is a little over 2 hours drive South of Brisbane at the top end of NSW.
I’m totally not about the whole touristy thing, and just want to travel, surf, and have some fun. So I think I’m going to make my way down to the lowereast coast like you advised. Are there alot of places to camp for cheap or free near the beaches? I’m on a shoestring budget, like, seriously… I plan on paying with shoe strings. But seriously, I’m looking for some secluded, not so crowded areas.
And the drinking age is 19 here, which I turn in Feb… I will definitely be taking advantage of the age limit… What’s a good cheap lager?
Thanks.
Oh, yeah… and a one hour drive is no biggie at all. I live at least a 1/2 hour away from any real cities(which are small), and live out in the boonies, so I’ll be used to it.
South coast can be as cheap as you want it to be- lots and lots of caravan parks, or national parks if you want to pay nothing for a place to pitch a tent. As for cheap larger…hmmm you can get a slab of XXXX (thats its actual name 4X) for like 25 bucks if it’s on special. Or alternatively if you hate not only your tastebuds but also your liver try out the $6 goon bad (fruity white wine is the best), or the fated passion pop (3 bottles for 10 bucks) shudder…
This is the lowest of the low- trust me, i just finnished school and am partying on shrapnel.
Best of luck,
Mark
