Anyone ever thought of a full suspension MUni?

Well I’ve been thinkin about how I would go about builiding a full suspension MUni for big drops, I think it would be sorta neat to build and ride. But the problem is that when the shocks went down the chain connection the hub to the cranks would slacken adn you would have your feet spinnin. And also just goin about making it so that also when the upper part of the uni went down the hub connected to the chain and crank arms would hit the tire, and then you would fall face first. And also the shocks would hav to be very stiff, but I think I could solve that by gettin some shocks off a Zellers bike since they are extrememly stiff. So if anyone can understand what I have just said, then tell me yoru thoughts on my plan. And any sugeststions on how you would go about building it.

why dont you just make the suspension on the seat pole between the seat and the forks??
that way you can start out simple and build up more advanced designs.
if suspension is on the post you wouldnt have to worry about chains and all of the more complicated stuff that might come to you later

You could maybe work in the use of a modified rear derailer or a chain tensioner depending on how much travel you planned on having. Good luck!

Big drop uni

I was thinking, for big drops etc, couldn’t you make a uni with a moto x front or back tire and wheel? loads of air capacity, and no chance of bending. I know, it’d be heavy, and wide, but i think it could be an interesting project. Any thoughts?

Build a model of your design first, to see what the pros and cons are.

Don’t put the pedals on top of the wheel. That puts the rider too high up.
How about the pedals in front of the wheel? Then the rider can sit back,
more like a regular mountain bike seat tube angle (or probably more tilted
back).

Hi,

This is completely opinion on my part and others may disagree, but anyway:

I think that hucking big drops to easy terrain are somewhat boring, especially to flat ground, no
matter how high it is! I’d way rather nail a 4’ drop to a tight railing or log, compared to a 7
foot drop to flat ground.

To me the attraction is in situations where you have to accurately nail some feature in order to
stay upright on the landing. This includes transition landings offroad, or trials features such
as another obstacle that you’re dropping to. For these kinds of drops, you want a cushy tire but
not at the expense of manouverability. I’m not sure that going to a wider tire than 3" will give
you any more advantage here.

Remaining a trials rider not a hucker,
-Kris.

Err I have tried a grasstrack bike rear tyre - basicly a motor cross tyre but
lighter and kris is right, the manoverability sucks and doing huge drops gets
dull quickly

point taken. My general idea is along the lines of a concept uni, if you know what i mean. You have concept bikes, cars etc, and admittedly, alot of uni’s could be viewed as concept full stop, but i reckon it’d be an intresting starting point for innovation which would eventually be refined into something useable every day. Don’t know how, but then i don’t reckon the guys taking the back wheel off their pennyfarthings knew that in the distant future people would be riding their wierd invention across countries and down huge mountains…
Ditto on the not becoming a hucker, and sticking with trials. By the way, just being nitpicking, you said you’d stick to trials Kris, and didn’t mention muni. Have i missed something, or are you shifting your emphasis?

Thanks for the thoughts guys

Totally agree- go for it if you have a cool idea.

I’d say in the end, my favorite would be MUni so I guess I should have added that!

Remaining both a MUni and trials rider,

Well one reason I wanted to make a full suspension, is just to have fun tryin to figure out a design that would actually work, and then a way to go about building it, and then finally if all worked try to ride it. Also I thought it would be neat to make one because I had never heard of one, and last becuase I wanted to see what it would be like to go off a big drop on one. WEll anyways what jr699@soton.ac.uk and Kris said, about big drops get boring, well i agree sorta, when i did the 8’ i had a adreneliin rush, partly becuase it was my biggest drop done, and becuase it was just high up. But also its fun to ride hard stuff to, like when I hopped onto a sitting bench and then onto the back and off, that was real exciting for me. So I myself like to do everything, I find everything fun.

Hi,

As I recall, someone a little while back had played with the idea of taking a pair of rock shox forks and building a Muni around it. If I am not mistaken, the problem with this design was that the tire would rub on the frame due to the shocks in the forks.

In response to playing around with the shock in the seat tube,
I remember reading that you could take a Cane Creek Thudbuster suspension seat post apart and then turn the suspension spring upside down and put it back together and that
helped.

Thought these anectotes would help.

Later
