Any suggestions for a 29 Uni?

Trying to decide amongst the various 29 unicycles offered on unicycle.com. I’m leaning toward the Nomad (less expensive), but also considering the “drak” models. The primary use will be road, with some light offroad use. Any thoughts? Are the drak models worth the extra money?

Based on your intended use I would go with the Nomad. The Drake has a 4mm wider rim with 4 more spokes so it will be a little more stable, a little stronger, and a little heavier (the beefier tire will also add weight).

Between those two I would go for the Nomad. The Drak has a slightly better wheel for offroad but comes with a crazy heavy tire and really long cranks.

The Nomad is set up nicer for XC Muni and mixed riding. The skinnier rim might also be a plus on the road.

There is also the Nimbus Road which is set up like the Drak with shorter lighter cranks and a BA tire.

Sounds like the nomad would be the ticket for you. I just bought a nomad a few weeks ago, my intended use was off road. I really like the nomad a lot except for one thing, it wont fit a larger tire… now I’m wishing I would have bought the drak model. If your interested in a used nomad only a few weeks old let me know, I’ll make a fair deal. It’s in great shape.

Thanks for the advice guys!

QU-AX 29 Cross.

Have you thought about the QU-AX 29 Cross?

I’m hoping to buy one this weekend - but the boss is mentioning over time so it may not happen

Look at my post on ‘product reveiews’ a good few people who own one have given it the thumbs up and at £200 its pretty cheap.

So the frame is different on the Drak? It’s hard to tell from the pictures.

The Drak is new, can’t really tell from the pictures if it’s bigger through the crown, but if it comes with a Dissent then it has some pretty big clearance.

I’m assuming that anton005 made his comment after finding that nothing larger than a Stout would fit.

I like the rounded frame better than a square top

Maybe Nimbus will add a disc brake mount, mmmmm.

Personally, I found the Dissent to be too much tread for a 29er, but Josh at UDC and Terry (Muniaddict) seem to like it.

The Drak does have a narrower rim (42mm) than a KH which will affect how the tire spreads out, though honestly it’ll be a negligible difference (5mm).

If your main use is Road, then you should go with a 36. I recommend the KH36.

Yup, but it seems the Racing ralph might fit on the nomad, which from the 29er tire thread seems at least to be better than the stout. The folks at UDC favor the Dissent too.

I really like the nomad, so I can’t really justify spending a bunch of coin just so I can put a bigger tire on it. It is fun on the road and off the road.

The difference between the drak frame and the nomad frame is the drak is a bit taller, which gives it a bunch more tire clearance. On the nomad my tire is sitting in the rounded part of the crown, so it has less width than the space between the legs of the frame. On the drak the tire is still between the parallel parts of the frame so no width is lost to the rounded crown.

If you like the RR 2.4, then you’ll love the Ardent 2.4, and they are close enough in size that if one fits both fit.

Josh likes the Dissent, so that’s his 29er muni

Though both of my munis are aluminum now, I wouldn’t mind getting back to steel, esp with the round crown. Just imagine if that new frame was wide enough for the 125mm disc hub and it had disc mounts…

Is there really a difference between the Nimbus round-crown frame and the Drak frame? Anyone care to measure the crown height?
