Hey! Total rookie here I live in the middle of nowhere a.k.a. Iowa. Any other Iowans hiding in the corn fields?
I’m not, but welcome to the site and to the hobby. There seem to be geographic pockets with enough unicyclists to have something of a community, and then there’s the rest of us who get our social interaction here.
Good luck either way. Have fun and stick with it.
Welcome SmileySam…we’re pretty sparsely distributed on the whole but with this forum and YouTube we can share our highs, our lows (and I have so many) and get lots of advice to help build those unicycling skills.
Hope to see some pictures/video of you in action soon

Hello SmileySam,
I’m quite the rookie myself. I’ve owned my unicycle for 1 wk now. I’m quite a distance from Iowa, but I passed through there quite some time back.
My son and I are learning together and he’s picking it up much faster than this old man. It’s frightening, fulfilling, frustrating and fun. I wish you all the best. This is a nice community and a great place to get advice and encouragement. There are many posts of people charting their progress in the threads. This is the best advice I’ve gotten here: “Keep your weight in the saddle and not on the pedals, keep your back straight and don’t look down”. I find it difficult to do all those things simultaneously but when I do manage for the briefest of moments I am convinced it is possible to ride one of these things. My longest distance unassisted is roughly 8 - 10 ft and it felt wonderful.
All the best,
UniSpud & Son
