OK, first, I’m too damn lazy to do a search and there’s probably been a thread on this. If so, sue me.
So who else is a disc golf fanatic out there. Or maybe not even fanatic, just enjoy playing occasionally.
I got into it about a year ago and just love it. None of the pretentious, I’m richer than thou, stuff that real golfers have to deal with. Pretty laid back, the courses are usually in beautiful places, challenging, usually great people who are into it (though once I met a real prick on the coarse), and usually free to play. I can’t wait to start playing again this spring. The coarses here are still a little bit snowy and muddy. I learned the hard way last winter that you don’t play in the snow. Disc slices right through the snow and you can never find it. On the plus side, if you get out to the course just as the snow melts you can usually find a disc or two. If there’s a number or e-mail on it, I’ll try to return but if not, what else can I do but keep it. I live in the mountains of northern Arizona so the coarses here are natural and heavily treed so it’s real challenging. When you’re out playing it’s very common to hear the unmistakable sound of a disc ‘thudding’ firmly into to a tree followed by any number of expletives. My stepson got me into it. He plays competitively and man, can that kid drive! He’s gotten a couple of aces in his life and I’ve seen him graze the net twice on his tee shot. Closest I’ve gotten to an ace, so far, has been when the disc dropped about 3 feet in front of the basket on the tee shot on about a 300 ft. par 3. One day…
I like to play.
I’m not very good at all. I only have one long range driver. But I find playing the game to be a fun thing to do to get to socialized with people. I will probably play this weekend.
I’m an addict… even though I’ve only played a handful of times. I went and played with the Hoovers (Nathan and Beau) a couple times and since I got my own discs, I’ve been playing every chance I get, course or no course. At lunchtime I practice drives in the field behind my office. In the evening I practice my short game at the local park. At night I dream about golfing. It’s worse than a crack addiction.
My best friend and girlfriend also got hooked after their first games. The sound of the chains “chinging” when you make a putt evokes a Pavlovian response… gotta play another hole. It’s such a fun game no matter how good or bad of a player you are, unlike stick-and-ball golf.
I haven’t come close to an ace, but I made my first birdie (on a par 3 course) the last time I played. My drive landed maybe 6 feet from the pin, which was downhill and out of sight. What a rush!
The course I play often is heavily wooded so I’m all too familiar with the “thud” of a disc against a tree. Some of my drives barely make it 20-30 feet before smacking a branch. It’s good training, though, my control is slowly getting better.
To augment my small collection of worn old hand-me-downs, I just dropped $80 on new discs from gottagogottathrow.com. These guys are a real class act. They called me up to confirm the details of my order (disc colors and weights) and even let me know that one of my discs was being discontinued. When I asked how I could replace that disc in the future they took some time to ask me about my playing style and then gave me some replacement options as well as the history of the disc I had bought. Way cool!
Thats a great disc golf web site. I just added it to my favorites. I almost hate to detract from the great riding in Moab, but next year we could make a round of golf a fun side activity. Maybe we could ride unis between shots. Found this golf course in Moab. Private so it’s not free but it’s cheap.
The idea of a pro disc golf association just seems weird to me.
I don’t really associate disc golf with a pro sport, just a little leisure time activity that you do to enjoy time with your friends. But this idea may come because I have only played it on a college campus where other college kids were playing.
I’ve playde a few times and I really enjoyed it. I mostly play ultimate, and I’m on uor high-school team. Sometimes we play golf during practice to tune our long throws and accuracy, (or when nobody feels like running) and that is always fun.
I’ve played quite a few times, all through school, one of the teachers at my middle school was obsessed, and occaisonally would take kids out to play. that was a few years ago, and I even…got (Found it on the side of the road one day) a mid-range driver, though I haven’t been back to play since…I’ve been meaning to do that…Maybe I will as soon as they’re opened up again
I’m just getting into disc golf. My longboard pal played a lot of disc golf a few years back and I was curious about it but stick and ball golf put me off so much that I couldn’t bring myself to try the disc version.
Nonetheless, last Fall, on a whim, I snuck onto a disc golf course with a ‘frisbee’ I had found a few days before in the woods. To my surprise and amusement, it was crazy fun!
So I bought two sets of 3 discs in the hopes that I could talk my partner and/or uni pal into playing with me this year. We’ll see how it goes. At the very least I could ride to the disc golf course on my uni, have a bit of a round, and then ride back.
i love disc golf! i play at our heavily treed course at least once a week during the summer. This year my season will take a while to start because of my ski crash…(fractured vertibra) but i cant wait to hit some trees1
I started playing last fall. I purchased 4 different colored mid range driver discs. 1 for each member of the family. wife, myself, 5 year old and 8 year old boys.
There is a very nice course in my town, at a state park where I also ride Muni. None of us played that well so far, but everyone seemed to enjoy it. We’ll see what happens this spring.
For years I’ve lived just minutes away from TerraceCreek Park. In fact, a couple years ago Sabin and I did some MUni trials around the course and learned the layout, but I had never played it.
Last July I played a course with my Ultimate Disc had had a great time so a month or so ago I finally got a set of Disc Golf discs and finally started playing at my local park. This game is a gas! The DG discs took some getting used to; I was used to throwing a 180g ultimate disc. These things were way more demanding to throw straight.
I also have an old school course, with wood posts, at Bicentennial Park closer than Terrace Creek and a great Seattle City park at MineralSprings about 15 minutes away.
The on line course directories are very usefull. On my way back from a road trip to Oregon last week I played RoosterRock.
Another great thing about Disc Golf is my MUni is a great way to get around the course if I’m playing solo.
The Hoovers are like the Pied Pipers of disc golf. I hadn’t played in decade(s), and then played a round with them before the ride around Lake Tahoe in June. I was hooked, so had to go out and get a bag and start accumulating some discs. Bought a new one today, as a matter of fact.
Once the Hoovers got me hooked, I set a goal of playing five different courses in Washington this summer, using the course finder at PDGA.com. While I ended up meeting the five course goal, it wasn’t all in WA. Played one in Nevada, one in WA, two courses in upstate NY, and two in Vermont.
Today, Unibrier gave me a schooling, and I added his two courses above to my list. Eight courses since June…I think it’s starting to fall into the category of obsession. Just hope I can improve my skill and consistency this winter. I’ve been getting better, but not reliably. I think that’s one parallel with stick and ball golf. Today was probably my worst round of the last five I’ve played.
I should clarify my post above. In the early '80s we played at Woodland Park many times. The targets were trees and the discs were what ever we happened to have at the time. They shut down DG at that park because of conflicts with the picnicers. No playing since then until now.
I’ll forever be doing search and rescue missions for my lost disc on 17 and now your’s.
I too enjoy disc golf. I’m still learning, but I have a disc bag and 6 or 7 discs, so I can invite friends who’ve never played out, lend them a disc and be on our way.
Between unicycling and disc golf, my office coworkers think I’m straight out of Obscure Sports Quarterly.
