A bit more than a week ago, I fell down some stairs on my uni, and sprained my ankle quite badly. Doctor said I stretched and maybe tore some ligaments, and may have burst an artery (My toes and bottom of my foot were turning blue filling with blood), but he said it wasn’t broken (based on x-rays). He said to keep off it for a while if it hurt. He said I could start unicycling again within 3 days of the accident if I felt like it.
I question a lot of what he said. There’s no way I’d be able to uni now–I’m still walking on crutches with my foot in a splint.
I’m not really sure how long to keep doing this–all I know is that if I walk around without the splint, it hurts a lot the next day.
Does anyone have any advice on how to speed up the healing process? Or when I should start cycling again?
Also, I had a doctors note that said I should work sitting down and not carry stuff at work for 7 days. The day I gave them that note, they fired me. They didn’t give any explaination, not had they ever mentioned any possiblity of it happening before.
Is that legal of them?
my advice is to rest dont overdo it for a while. And then once the swelling is down start to build it back up with streaching and slowly putting more weight on it.
When I sprained my ankle bad I couldnt walk on it for 4 days and had swelling that looked like a grapefruit on the side of my leg. It got better only with time.
That is good, I fell wrong twisted an ankle and have been stuck in one of those boot thingies for a week (three weeks left). All I can say is what the others have Ice it and keep it up. Something I did when I was using crutches was putting my foot down (bad one) and put a little wait on it while keeping most of my wait on the crutches and walking forward that way.
My insurence starts on Monday. I thought it would start a lot earlier, but it didn’t–meaning my hospital visit wasn’t covered.
I will look into that, though, once it starts. I hate not being able to uni at all!
I wish I’d learned to ride with one foot before I did this!

It depends on state laws, colorado is an at will state meaning that an employer can fire you at any time with or without a reason and also you can quit anytime you like which you can do anywhere unless you have some kind of a contract. I would look into the state laws concerning employment, some states have protection from this sort of thing.
For your ankle I recomend an ankle support that is called an ASO you can get them online. I can find a link for you or you can google ASO ankle support and find them. They lace up and have straps that are a double figure eight around your ankle and give your ankle a lot of support. I wear them on both ankles when I muni after I broke my ankle on the slickrock trail, they work better for me than the active ankles and would give your sprained ankle the support it needs.
I sprained my ankle more times than you can count, the last time I was going down stairs at the lenwood mall, I know that It sucks, but you cant ride for at least a month then you gatta build it up by puting more aND MORE WIEGHT on it till it doesnt bother you at all. In the mean time its I.C.E. (Ice, Compresion and Elevation).
get hold of a labour consultant or a free legal advice clinic at your local varsity or council (depending where in the world u r) and have this checked out

try n avoid using the joint at all
the damaged soft-tissue will start healing itself slowly and everytime u stumble and inadvertantly hurt it again, u could be putting that process back by a couple of days
Ice
this helps to reduce the swelling and the accompanying pain
just remember, the body made it swell for a reason, to protect the injured joint against movement
pay attention to R above
Compression
this helps to reduce the swelling and protect the joint from moving in a way that will increase the damage
Elevation
keep the injured part of your body higher than the level of your heart
this will help reduce swelling and pain and also help protect against potentially damaging movement (cause when u’re lying on a couch with your foot higher than your heart and an ice-pack strapped to the side of it, u’re unlikely to do the hokey-pokey)
and get a professional opinion
if it’s nothing (serious), u’ll have the peace of mind of knowing that and if it is something serious, it is (almost) always better to get it to a doc sooner rather than later
(i can’t think of a single instance where it’s better to wait before getting an injury to a medico, i just put the ‘(almost)’ in there in case… )
