Another mad idea

How about…

Putting tiny little wheels or rollers on the ends of your saddle, so when you
drop the seat on the ground while riding, it will roll along instead of
dragging.

Or has this already been tried?

Hmmmm… That is a mad idea! It would be pretty cool, but chances are that the weight of the wheel would overbalance it so the uni wouldn’t roll along on the wheels. Unless the tiny wheels were pretty big, but then it would be kind of uncomfortable to ride.

It’s a nice idea, but I have to be a spoilsport and say it probably won’t work. You think about how many people can ride seat on floor… Then think how many can ride an UW. You would have thought the techniques would be similar but the reason seat on floor is easier is because the seat on the floor causes drag, which in turn gives the extra stability. With the rollers, much of this drag would be lost, as would the stability. Unless you can ride an UW, I think it is better to scratch up your bumpers

I believe the seat also sways from side to side when seat dragging, especially when the seat is behind (isn’t that right Jagur?).

I dunno, Icky, but you’re definitely not thinking on a grand enough scale.
That’s because you’ve failed to consider what’s really needed:

Ejection seats.

No, I’m not kidding. Imagine a seat which, as the unicycle begins to go
down, automatically ejects itself, then launches a small parachute,
allowing it to drop gently to the ground.

The ejection mechanism could be triggered by the angle of the unicycle,
which would only be a minor inconvenience to those riders who insist on
riding with the seat out in front (but simply replace the seat with a
projectile and imagine being able to fire a salvo at your enemies as your
uni converts itself into an ultimate).

The possibilities are endless! The only question is, should ejection be
explosively triggered, or should we just use springs?

Re: Another mad idea

i started thinking about that as soon as DudleyDoRide mentioned that i
looked like a had a wheely bar while rideing with the seat out back in
the other thread…

i think a tracking ball sticking out of the rear bumper would be
better idea and would be omni-directional,but i still wouldnt want
one.the bumpers last long enough for me not to care.the Miyata seat is
very light and hardly puts any friction on the road,a heavier seat
like a KH would ware though faster i think.

if your realy worried about it,then buy a roll of duct tape and
replace the layers as they ware down.

(P.S. the forum is down so i had to go though Google)

Another mad idea

I have a not-quite-so-mad-as-that-“Tiny and/or Pretty Big & Tiny Wheel(s) on the Seat”-idea.

(Hey! Stop trying to make a Unicycle into a B**e!)

Tie a bungee cord (or piece of clothesline swiped from your neighbor’s yard) to the front of your saddle, run the end over your shoulder and tie it to your wrist… and when you ride “seat in back”, just flex your arm downwards to keep the saddle floating just off the abrasive surface of whatever you’re riding on.

Re: Another mad idea

Let’s think about this a moment, shall we. Take a skill that is difficult to do (and therefore likely to cause UPD’s in the early stages) and add to it a cord that is tied to the unicycle and passes by your neck.

By all means, sendhair, try it yourself. I, for one, have no interest in adding strangulation to the possible ways of hurting myself on my uni. :astonished:

Re: Another mad idea

I for one think it’s a great idea. It isn’t for anything serious, just for run right? Might I suggest that you use those wheels that can spin, like the front wheels of a shopping cart. That way the seat can sway back and forth. If it makes the trick that much more difficult, more power to you if you can pull it off.

Just remember that if you do it, post pics, vids, and plans.

As for the ejection seat idea, I think it’s a bit less practical then the already non-practical seat drag wheels, but I would like to see it done anyway. My vote is air cannon as a method to launch the chute.

Good luck,
Daniel

There’s this special device that some of us on this forum use when we post…

since you’ve registered just 2 months ago, you may have trouble recognizing one when you see it…

It’s called a JOKE.

You could always just strap a skateboard to the back of your saddle, it would also serve as a sort of sissy bar when riding the Uni seated.

face it folks the track ball is the best idea…not that its a revolutionary one.

Trackball is cool, unless your goal is to keep the seat from going side to side. Then use grippy little wheels that will help you go straight. For spins, Standard Skill circles, etc., go back to the trackball. I’d say tear up an old computer mouse, but those balls probably wouldn’t hold up well to the initial drop.
