Does anyone know anything of significance that happened in 1588?
I need to know for a summer American History assignment, and I can’t find anything online
well, it wasnt american history, but the spanish armada defeated the english naval forces led by drake in 1588. (could be the oher way around).
Sounds like around the time of the lost colony. Look it up. And good luck.
I’m not sure there was much American history at that time. I’m sure there were probably people in the land, but it would be a hundred years or so before anything American popped up.
From some very quick research that you very easily could have done yourself it looks like it is the Spanish Armada thing because that allowed England access to the New World. Which up to that time Spain had dibs on.
My other guess is that it could ahve possibly had to do with one of the political writers who’s ideas helped form the American Revolution sucha s Voltaire or Locke but they also are later than that.
Are you allowed to use wikipedia?
Because at our school we can’t because anybody can change it.
Alright, Bruce, I gotta know how you’re defining “American”.
What about the naming of the continent, which I believed is named after Amerigo Vespucci (an Italian)?
Yes, Wikipedia is not a solid reference source. But if you find stuff there it should help you find “backup” at more reliable sources, like maybe even a library. Do they still have those?
John, is your middle name Bruce?
ok, everyone saying something about the Spanish Armada is right…I saw stuff about that, but I overlooked it as not having anything to do with “America”
I kinda forgot that it was 1588…
Thanks for putting up with my stupidity, and for helping
Who said that America was named after a Amerigo Vaspucci ? I know I was taught that in school but I have never seen any reference. What elce did he do to get recognition?
Try this one on.---------From some fairly arcne reading I did once.
Contrarry to popular tradition AMERICA is a corruption of indian words approximating AMA RUKA which according to my source translated to LAND OF THE FEATHERED SERPENT. ----Quetzalcoatl anyone?
Those died off with small pox.
1588 was the year when the first McDonald’s was started, what with all the money to be made of those Indians and tourists…
Anyway, John Foss is right about America being named after Amerigo Vespucci…I think…
Just got these in an email from the Librarians’ Internet Index.

Alex, you’re lame, asking these people for our history homework.
she said we could use the internet
Hmmmm, thanks.
Yeah, but how much more valuable can it be to be handed info from someone who witnessed the events first hand?
