All Carbon Coker

Has anybody thought to make an all-carbon coker, using some of the same technology used in bikes? It could be really light. Carbon frame, seatpost, rim, seat… It would probably weight 5 pounds! Or would the unique stresses of a unicycle make this not work… I can understand not using carbon for mUni for the strenght, but for the road it should work alright…

It’s been well and often thought of, but other than the custom one-off carbon 36" frame on Flickr (I forget whose it was), no one has been able to interest a manufacturer such as Giant or others with facilities to make such a thing.

Plus you still have all the design issues to grapple with, regardless of what materials the frame is made of. It’d be nice to see a frame with modular bearing holders so that you could use either 40, 42, or 44mm bearings, thus opening it up to using just about any hub.

I think a Coker tire weighs about 5 pounds. In other words, there’s a limit to how light you’re going to get as long as we’re using the existing tires and rim sizes.

Here’s Scot Cooper’s one-piece carbon 36". Looks like at the time (two years ago) it also had a carbon seat and post, but probably conventional rim (airfoil) and hub.

It would be hard to make a really big wheel that’s really light, without making it really weak. I’d rather improve my fitness level with something heavier that’s a lot less maintenance-intensive.

Yeah, modular bearing holders (or some sort of industry standard) would be nice… wow… i didn’t know a coker tire weighed that much…

FYI: The frame was made by Calfee

I believe there was a dialog with Calfee regrarding making a carbon rim, but it was cost prohibitive.

That is one of the most beautiful things I have seen. :sunglasses: I’d heard rumour of a carbon 36" frame, but never seen it before.

Any idea how much it weighs? A Nimbus 36 frame is 1.1kg, I think a standard steel frame is about 950g and an aluminium one (like the up-coming KH36) I expect to be about 700g. Is this carbon beauty much less than that?

They’re silly little savings considering the cost and effort, but still it’s very cool.

Well i know they make giraffe unicycles, just like the one they sell on UDC UK. So i guess a carbon fibre coker would be awesome to make/own/buy. :stuck_out_tongue:

And there is Magura brake mounts on the Carbon frame. Wow cool!
