Alaskan roads

Hey Alaskan guys –

What are the roads like for Cokering up there? Someone I know is considering a road trip from AK down to Vancouver. Are they safe enough for riding? What are the best couple of months for that kind of riding?

They are considering both Anchorage and Juneau for starting points.

Thanks in advance!

Wow, that’s over 2000 miles!

Google found this . My uncles have done the trip in their RV’s. I’d love to do that route someday.

Edit: There is a Bicycle Tour next summer!

Must go back to work now.

anytime between july and august is good. And the roads are all really windy and steep but it should be fine till you get into yukon territories then most roads are dirt!

You’ll want to do some careful research. For instance, the sum total of roads you can traverse from Juneau is something like 40-50 miles. At least that was true last time I was there (a while ago!)

But from southern Alaska, to go down to BC, maybe you should check out the Stewart-Cassiar Highway - it goes close to Juneau. You could take it to Prince Rupert and then the ferry to Vancouver…pretty bold trip though. Read this too.

Good luck and let us know what you decide on.

There isn’t any time between July and August, or they must be in
different years.

If you’d like to see the Alaska Highway in detail, I’ve got over 60
captioned pictures posted at

Most of the road is good, but a lot has no shoulders and in the
summer, a lot is torn up for rebuilding. So it’s a very tough ride.

Wow thanks Murray. How’d you catch wind of this thread? Are you a unicyclist?

To me the photos are reassuring. The road looks a lot better than it did in my imagination!
