Airseated a KH with the original Cover

So I got bored and I airseated a KH Seat with the stock cover. The only change I made to it was sewing a drawstring housing to the bottom edge of the seat cover. With everything tucked under, it looks fairly stock. The main reason I did this was because I wanted to see what I could do without spending any money on anything but what I already had, and I think it turned out pretty nicely.

In addition to the cover, I also hand fabricated a 1/8 inch steel plate to take the place of the original 1/16 inch plate. I also tacked grade 5 bolts in place on the plate, so I won’t have spinning bolts any longer.

The new plate installed in the base with grade 5 bolts welded to it:

I taped up the metal parts of the seat so to be assured that nothing would be punctured (it kind of looks like a duck…

I was worried that the seams on the sides of the seat would split when I inflated it with air, so I reinforced the stitchings:

The air pillow is a tube sock that I sewed down the middle to keep the inner tube in line and comfortable:

Underside of the seat (the nuts are 1/2 inch and the bolts are 1/4 inch- I beefed it up some):

It’s fairly comfortable to ride, and I think it came out pretty well for spending $0 and not knowing what I was doing.

Let me know what you guys think!

Looks mega comfy, Now if only I was good at doing things…

looks clean, very pro

awesome. it looks as good as my airseat, and i spent money :frowning: you guys rock, i want one of those husky seat plates!

digitalattrition,
I knew sooner or later someone was going to get creative with the KH seat. I’d like to know what you think about the ridding comfort of your creation. I’d also like to know what types of seats you have used and how it compares with them.
Good Job.

I would say that it is VERY comfortable, and at the same time it is somewhat firm. I think that this is good, as I could use it for trials rather than just a cruiser uni. The firmness of the seat allows me to have a better grip on it when jumping.

The added seat plate also helps a lot. I now have no fear of breaking the seat plate and having to ride with it broken. The added stiffness of the seat also makes it more comfortable.

The new plate does add some weight to it, but since it is airseated, it weighs about the same as a stock KH. The weight difference isn’t really noticable.

Because I put grade 5 bolts in, I never have to worry about them breaking, and since I welded them to the plate, I’ll never have to worry about spinning bolts.

The tube sock air pillow also works well…a lot better than I expected it to. It holds the inner tube straight and in 2 paths, so it fills up the seat very nicely. However, the only change I would make to it would be taping the sock in half, so it would be easier to install, and I think it may add some more comfort.

The drawstring cover is extremely functional and holds the drawsting well, which is turn keeps the cover nicely cinched.

Also, I think the white adds a nice little flair to the look of the underside of the seat.

The seats that I have ridden include miyata, KH, viscount, united, airseated Kh with Roach cover, airseated miyata, and various torker seats.

Overall, this is one of the most comfortable.

In the future I may add a strip of material on the the inside of the on the edge where it folds to the bottom of the seat to reinforce it and totally prevent ripping.

Clear as mud?

Nick, can you go through that process again with my seat? That looks like a sweet setup … it’d be cool to have an airseated MUni. I can pay you for labor if you like.

Yea, I could possibly do that. I need to get some more bolts though… And I need to think of little ways to somewhat improve the design (like what I talked about in my previous post).

Same.

In all honesty, the upholstry part wasn’t bad at all. It’s the first time that I had done anything with cloth, and I think it turned out pretty good. Needless to say, if I can do it, you guys can do it.

The only part that someone might have a lot of trouble with is making the metal seat plate. I’ve been working with metal for a while, and it took about a half hour to make the plate with out heating it. When I made the next plate for another seat, I used a burning outfit and cut the time to make it in half.

Not only that, it fit the seat exactly as the original did.

nice! i have one w/ the fusion seat cover and was thinking of doing the same thing. i made an airseat when i first started unicycling, but i sucked at doin it. i put the air tube under the foam. so it kinda defeated the purpous.

Hm…I haven’t seen a fusion cover in real life yet. Do they just have a drawstring and whatnot?

If that’s the case, this would be super east with a fusion cover.

I’d still reinforce the stitchings on the sides though.

they are supper cool, supper fitted and supper expensive.

Oh…then I super won’t be buying one.

I could probably make a KH cover copy…but it may take some practice.

Should I attempt making one or should I just buy covers? What do you guys think based on my seat?

edit- Oh, and monociclos, what do you think of my seat? I want to know because your air seat is incredible. Do you have any tips or anything?

Make one yourself! It is really fun, it takes some time but it worths.

I like your saddle, if i where you i would modify the air pillow, the shape is not a shape of a unicycle saddle.

My old air seat was home made 100%, I made the cover and the dog bone style pillow. I found very hard to keep in place the second level of the pillow.

Any way keep inproving your saddle, it is fun!!!

Cheers!

Some other air seats i´ve made in the past here:
Viscount - kh - air seat:

KH - Air - Miyata:

So did you remove all the original foam, or keep some or all of it?

I remove all the foam allways

I removed all of the foam as well.

I still have it though…I might be making another seat with it if I get bored (maybe shave it to fit a miyata with a gemcrest seat cover or something).

Yea, the air pillow was kind of a last second descision. I had actually sewn my own air pillow in the shape of the KH seat base before i decided to use the sock, but I ended up making it too thin, so it didn’t give the tube enough room to expand.

I could post a pic of it if you want, its really nothing special though.
