Air Saddle...Dissapearing Valve

Hey all, I have an air saddle, and the valve pops out of a hole drilled in the saddle. Neat.

Here’s the catch, when the tube is inflated, it pops the leeather cover off the saddle. No problem, I jsut tape it secure. However, the valve pops into the saddle inards all the time. I don’t generally need access to the valve, but when I do, it’s a real chore.

Any ideas on how to keep the valve poking through the hole?

how far is the valve sticking out the bottom?mine sticks out as far as a valve does on a rim/tire.about 1 inch.

if its only out a little, this may be why.how big did you make the hole?

It’s the stock hole…rim size. The tube is a 12" bicycle tube folded around…it was an option from Unicycle.com, to replace the foam insides. there isn’t really a away to fir the tube in with the valve pointing down. So I had to put it in with the valve pointing from the back, into the centre.

When deflated, the valve sticks out like a rim valve. With enough air to comfort up my ride…well, did you ever see the Seinfeld episode about ‘Shrinkage’?

this is hard without pictures, but i think we drilled holes in differant places.that does not matter though cause i think what you need to do is put in a 20 inch tube instead of a 12 inch.that way there will be less “shrinkage”

does that make sense?try jamming a 20 inch tube in there and i bet you wont have to pump it up as much as a 12 inch.therefor the valve wont have any reason to travel.

That sounds like a reasonable solution. Jagur, You da man!

When the valve stem is protruding from the hole in the seat base wrap it
with electical tape just below the threaded part. If you wrap it enought it
should increase the width of the valve stem sufficient to keep it from
retracting into the seat.

Or you could try and find a tube with a presta valve (unlikely in smaller
sizes) and just lock it in place with the little threaded lock-nut.

Yo, get one of them cool dice valve caps for it. Mine stays put without it just fine. Unicycle.com pre-drilled my saddle base, but the hole was too far forward for my liking, so I drilled another further back so it’s right at the little rearward facing divit in the rear bumber if you know what I mean. I’ll take a photo as soon as my batteries are charged up for my digi camera. My friend Tom poked a hole in the back of his Roach cover just above the read bumper and sticks it out there with a little eye ball valve cap on it. You can see it in this picture. It actually looks like it is poking through the “O” in “ROACH” Joe in Iowa

Try a tube with a Presta valve (of course, that requires a Presta compatible
pump). I use Presta valve tubes on my bike. They’ve got a sleeve and
threaded ring to clamp the valve in place on the rim so it doesn’t disappear
inside (when changing tires or patching a flat). I would think that would
work just as well through the seat, unless the hole is very large.

Presta tubes are available at least as small as 16 inches:

(Note, the top half of the page is Schrader/“standard” valves, the Prestas
are further down the page.)

I was thinking a cable-tie would do this nicely.

Here’s a pic of where I put my valve stem and also shows where unicycle.com drilled further forward. If yours is drilled closer to the front, it may want to pull in. cheers
