Advice needed about a pet Tarantula

Anybody know anything about tarantulas?
We have a Chilean rose haired tarantula that we call Consuela. I’ve been worried about her for a few weeks because she hasn’t been eating. At times she will eat a cricket every other day but she hasn’t eaten any now for about three weeks. Is this normal? I read somewhere that this might indicate that she’s about to molt. Otherwise she doesn’t seem to be ailing in any way that I can see.

Does anyone feed their tarantulas anything other than crickets? Maybe she’s just sick of them. Any insightes into tarantual behavior would be welcome.

Here she is:

Looking forward to your advice,

My advice is "Holy sh!t that’s an absolutely horrible (IMO) choice for a pet and for god’s sake how can you just hold the thing in your hand!!! :astonished: :astonished: :astonished:

lol, same as any other pet place hand down and don’t squez the spider(or rat in my case)

Well i have a pet scorpion which if i put in my hand it just sits there and doesn’t move and my cousin has a terantula. Whenever i hold my scorpion. It’s really funny when i show it 2 my parents. They always freak out   :D.

So to have a terantula is cool. There’s no need for pest control.

Yes, she is very cool so I’m looking for advice on how to keep her that way.

Just look after it and have alot of patience. Treat it like as if was your best friend. My cousin says, it takes time but the rewards are cool. His trained it so well that for some reason when he calls the terantulas name. It starts crawling to him and ends up sitting in his hand. Now thats freaky and cool at the same time.

Sorry, I have no useful advice either. Looks like you’ll have to find the Tarantua-Owner’s Forum, or equivalent, or continue to be misunderstood here.

Steveyo, you ride a unicycle. In other words: “Holy sh!t that’s an absolutely horrible (IMO) choice for a sport and for god’s sake how can you just sit on the thing!!!”

I’ve more or less heard that before…

Quite cuddly really. You could try feeding it that white faced rat thing in your previous photo.

That sweet guinea pig is also part of our family and much BIGGER than the spider. A more likely scenario would be that the dog would eat them both. He can’t stand the sight of squirrels (the guinea pig sometimes looks like a squirrel to him) and he regularly gobbles up stray bugs.

Everyone has their own space, so life is preserved (except for the unlucky crickets).

lol confusing a rat with a ginipig

while i have no spider ownership experience, a google search seems to also suggest she’s molting (or cold)

http://www.fourwinds.net/pet/tarant.htm

She has a hot rock and sits near or on it so I don’t think she’s cold. I talk to her everyday and give her friends to eat. What more could a spider want?

That she’ll be molting soon seems like the most likely possibility but I don’t remember her not feeding for so long before the last time she molted. I thought maybe someone with tarantula experience could shed some extra bright light on the situation.

I’ll have to look up that old ‘pets’ thread and find out who said they had a tarantula.

Thanks for the link.

She’s saving up room to eat you and your family some night in the near future.

That’s a cool little spider! Most people have irrational fears about spiders, but those in particular are not very poisonous; the black widow, recluse and trap-door for examples are far more venomous than tarantulas in general. It’s mostly their large size that makes people think that they are dangerous. Austrailia has the most venomous variety of animals on the planet, by far! In fact, it is home to the WORLD’S most deadly spider: http://www.termite.com/spiders/Funnel-Web-Spider.shtml

My fears about spiders are perfectly rational, thank you. If a spider comes near me, I will kill it. Seems perfectly rational to me.

Oh, no! When we’re gone who will look after our unicycles?

:astonished: :astonished: :astonished: :astonished: Good thing we don’t live in Texas then!!!

Er…what? By “we”, you imply that neither of us live in Texas…and…well, I do.
