I’ve noticed that the actual tyre width is almost always smaller than the marked width. Today I settled on an Intense 24" x 2.7" Knobby tyre. I think it should be fine for me and it’s quite hard to get a 24" x 3" tyre in Australia from Australia. Sure, I would’ve preferred the Gazz 3" one but this’ll do.
From some measurements I took at the bike shop today, a 2.1" tyre was actually 57mm at the widest point and a 2.25" wide one was only 52mm at the widest part. I’m confused.
When I get my frame made, however, I want it to be able to fit a 3" wide tyre with about 5 or 6mm clearance. Can anybody who owns a Gazz or any other 3" wide tyre please tell me the actual measurement of the widest part of the tyre?
One more thing, is it true that the actual width of a tyre will increase if you fit it onto a wider rim? Also, can someone please give me a list of good rims other than those listed on unicycle.com? The only one of them that I could get is the Sun BFR one - is it any good and will it work very well with a 3" tyre on it?
I think you can find most of the information you are needing at Neils site.
By the way I was just going to pinch the link and it took me almost half an
hour to do it because he changed his site and there is so much great stuff
on their to distract you. Absolutly superb site, if you don’t know it go
and have a look at http://wobbling.unicyclist.com

Thanks Roger, that’s exactly what I was looking for. Am I right in assuming that “static width” is the actual width of the tyre? You’re right, it is a great site.
The marketing departments at the tire companies lie about the width of their tires and even about the weight. Any tire marketed as a 3" tire is just a marketing number. None of the 3" tires are actually 3" wide.
The tire width does change a little when mounted on a wider rim. A wider rim will let the tire fatten out a bit.
Get the Sun Doublewide rather than the BFR. The Doublewide is a better rim for wide tires.
I just measured my 24" Gazz on an Avro Zum Eliminator rim (a really wide rim). The tire is just shy of 73mm wide.
