Aaron gets Top Banana award at Fat Tyre Festival 2004

Aaron and I attended the Fat Tyre Festival in Keswick over the weekend and joined the Singlespeed MTBers on a 12 mile jaunt from KMB, Keswick up to threkeld, passed the Blencathra Centre downhill to the stream and back round Lonscale before decending to Keswick via Latrigg.

All thanks to KMB for a great ride!!! and a very good event.

Aaron kept up with the MTBers all the way (left me behind coming out of Keswick! but hey there’s a surprise)

They were so impressed with his riding (apparently he rode more than some of them - not that I saw him) they awarded him a Trophy for the most outanding rider of the weekend.

This was given to him by the World Downhill Champ Fabien Barel (see Pics) when he had finished having a go at Aaron’s uni. We met Tracey Moseley the UK champ as well - we will be going back in Easter as they want a rematch!! and may want their trophy back.

KMB have also very kindly put a link to our Club website and unicyclist.com so our attempt at spreading the word at the weekend was a bit of a success!

brilliant!!

well done

Sterling work from the sounds of it!
How did Fabien Barel get on with the unicycle? It sounds like you 2 should get “best missionary” award as well.

Very impressive! I think muniists and singlespeeders can have a great relationship with events like this. From what I hear singlespeed riders are a little “different” also so we should get along.

Congratulations! That looks like a great award, obvoiusly a bike award, but won by a unicyclist. Man does it look wet though! Wet terrain is where unicycles come a lot closer to keeping up with bikes (like at Mountain Mayhem this year).

Thanks guys, Fabien did well but he didnt ride away with it just yet so I am sure I could just about beat him on a downhill course [on muni’s of course].

Yea, a bit wet but when you spend best part of three hours with 170mm cranks whirring like a washing machine and still not catching anyone up or even getting close, you tend not to notice the drizzle!!

Next event is the slightly larger one - at Easter - they will have some great names there again, skills school, lots of local rides out around the Borrowdale fells and of course not to mention [again] Cumbria Muni & Trials Club Team will be doing a couple of demonstration shows. Last year they tried to arrange some spectacular Lake jumps but I dont know if they will manage to get around the red tape this year.

Although it is a MTB event, Keswick Mountain Bikes will make all unicyclists very welcome and you can join any of the rides etc

Worth driving (or flying if you are so inclined) all the way to the Lakes for!!
