Mine was fairly uneventful, went to a library, sent some job applications, read my book, then went to bed.
I sleep in my truck usually parked on a random residential street, this night was no different except I woke up a bit earlier than I normally would a bit dazed and confused and there is this little short man (who sort of looks like a leprechaun) wearing a loin cloth looking in my back window (which no longer exists) asking if I am OK.
He had smashed his Volkswagen Rabbit into the back of my jeep hard enough that the roof was buckled right in the middle, my left rear wheel was about 20cm further forward than it should be and I was now parked on the sidewalk 15m from where I had stopped for the night, The guy must have been cruising for that little car to have so much momentum.
Needless to say both cars were totaled. We called the cops, they called some tow trucks and two hours later here I am sitting in a hotel room writing this post with yet another insurance claim to deal with on this road trip that is getting to be much longer than I was first anticipating.
Probably the most noteworthy fatality of the crash was my beloved customized Nimbus 36er. I think I can salvage handle, seat, brake and hopefully the tire. The rim is SMASHED! I think it was in 5 pieces but I would have to have another look to be sure, all held together by the tangles of spokes still attached. Hub and cranks were a tangled mess as well as the Nimbus frame. Somehow my Muni escaped with only some cosmetic damage and a bent seatpost, man that thing is tough.
As for me I somehow got a mysterious cut on my chin and I must of banged my knee on something because it now hurts.
Ah well, never really liked that Jeep anyway, And this time it was not my fault!
Wow man that is rough, I hope you can get some kind of replacements out of this. It must be pretty unnerving to constantly go through all these really hard times.
I don’t think that the insurance covers my unicycles or anything other than the vehicles themselves. Honestly if it wasn’t for the hurt knee, and smashed up non-vehicle stuff (I haven’t checked but I think I also lost $800 worth of archery equipment) I would call this one a blessing in disguise because the Jeep was a lemon (bad stereo, power steering, transmission was almost gone, ABS was starting to act funny, etc.) so I am probably going to get more from insurance than I would if I tried t sell it so I can get a more reliable vehicle.
I am going to see if I can get some money out of the unicycling and archery equipment that was destroyed as their worth is probably equal the the truck. I doubt that it will work though.
I hate buying new vehicles when I am unemployed: Job dictates possible lifestyles, different lifestyles call for different types of vehicles
Nonsense, I have had plenty of luck (if you believe in such things), it just goes both ways.
I have met some really cool people, done some cool things, got to see friends I haven’t seen in years, stumbled on an amazing thanksgiving supper, avoided injury in two major crashes, managed to make it to Montreal with the first Jeep no problems, and have been having a blast.
Not to mention random kindness of strangers and the freedom of living on the road.
